The Movement of Consciousness

The Movement of Consciousness

NOTE: This section was changed a lot in v4. The first few sections might be moved forward to a more primary position, as it’s foundational to directed communication as well. This also ties in directly to attention.php. Consider. . . .

Nonphysical “travel” is merely the movement of attention.

Nonphysical Movement — The Star Field

Consciousness exists in a higher dimension than the physical. It can instantly move to any physical location simply by focusing itself there. Outside the physical, consciousness “travels” focuses. Whatever it focuses on is where it is.

Imagine consciousness in the nonphysical as being a central point in a sphere of the tiniest “stars”. I call this the “star field”. Each star is a reference to a certain person, place, or idea. Our attention on any of these points causes it to enlarge up around us. In this way we can find ourselves in the Grand Canyon, then move effortlessly to a Caribbean island. But these are reference points that others can also focus on, making them objective destinations.

Outside the physical, focus of attention is the equivalent of proximity.

Even when one point in the star field is enlarged out around us, the star field still exists. From the edge of the Colorado River, we think of our friend, directing our attention to his reference point in the star field, and a portal opens up to him before us.

Consciousness can split its focus between several things, and brings those things together in its experience. Those things become present to us, to our attention. When this happens, the physical mind assembles this into a coherent scene according to physical laws.

In this way, consciousness “moves” without moving spatially at all. When focused in a physical body, that becomes its primary physical location.

In the waking state you travel to places. They do not come to you. In dream reality, however, your intent causes places to spring up about you. They come to you. (Roberts 439)UR2channeled • modern • Seth

That’s an important choice of words: “spring up about you”. Places enlarge around you until they become your environment.

Focus and Frequency

Two aspects determine our nonphysical “location” or environment. The first is frequency, which determines the plane of consciousness we perceive and interact with. The other is our focus, which is the specific people or things we’re focused on.

Swedenborg describes how we move from place to place by changes in “state”, which refers to their level of love, which is equivalent to their openness or frequency.

In the spiritual world the only ground of distance is difference in the state of interiors NOTE: frequency and focus, thus in the heavens difference in the states of love, those who differ much being far apart . . . and likeness causing them to be together. (Swedenborg 33)

Anyone in the spiritual world who intensely desires the presence of another comes into his presence, for he thereby sees him in thought, and puts himself in his state. (Swedenborg 136)H&HOBEr • Christianity • Swedenborg

Instead of continents and other land formations that structure life on earth, here mental states provide the criteria for various kinds of perception which frame experience. . . .

I am now used to communicating with persons who may be nowhere visible to me, for example, the criteria for communication depending more upon the complementary relationships of mental states than upon “physical” availability. (Roberts 184)

There are schools, colleges. . . . They exist quite validly in certain areas of focus and consciousness, but they are “invisible” in other areas. . . . I could visit such “institutions” by desiring to do so, changing the state of my mind, and therefore transferring myself to a “location” that exists only to those in the same psychological state.

Here, the states of mind create the reality in a direct fashion. (Roberts 161)AJoaAPchanneled • modern • James

Phasing and Tuning Consciousness

Phasing is how consciousness shifts between different focuses and maintains multiple focuses. The flow comes through us as our attention, a rapid stream of moments of awareness. These moments are divided between any number of focuses, as we shift about the rapid flicker of its moments of awareness between them. I’ve experienced this many times in altered states.

We move by changing focus — even to entirely new environments.

When applied to movement in the astral, our focus is essentially our location. We move about our current environment due to what we focus on, and when we think about something else, we begin to follow that thought into a new environment. It’s what I call “Focus Projection”.

See “Attention Moves By Phasing” in attention.php.

Primary Phasing is the state where the mind is fully focused on physical sensory input or activity. Any derivation from this condition can be regarded as a phase shift, where some part or percentile of consciousness is, to a certain degree, aware in another form. One example is inattention, where . . . part of the mind has “wandered.” What we call daydreaming is another. Introspection, where attention is turned away from physical awareness, is a more deliberate phase shift, as are certain meditative states. Sleep is a shift in phasing to another state of consciousness where very little awareness of physical sensory input is taking place. . . .

As we tune a radio receiver gradually from one station—or frequency—to another, one signal fades and another is faintly heard. The receiver is shifting out of phase with the original station to the point where another station can be heard simultaneously. As we continue retuning, the original station is no longer heard and the other signal takes over. (Monroe 100-101)

Moving into out-of-body no longer had for me what could be called “movement.” . . . I began what I called the “quick-switch” method. Thereafter what happened was a fading out of one consciousness state into another. To describe it as “going out-of-phase” seemed more accurate. (Monroe 105)UJOBEr • modern • Monroe

Phasing is most apparent when you’ve split your attention between two things and can simultaneously see them both.

I felt like an observer, floating there between two worlds, one that I knew well and one that I didn’t know existed. (Morse 117)TbtLresearcher • modern • Morse

Everything—the doctors, the nurses, the delivery room, the ship, the water, and the far shore—was just sort of a conglomerate. It was all together, as if one scene was superimposed right on top of the other. (Moody 71)LALresearcher • modern • Moody

Sometimes I was able to shift a percentage of my awareness between my physical and my nonphysical body. It’s possible to perceive with both forms simultaneously and to adjust or shift the percentage of our awareness between our bodies. (Buhlman 66)ABtBOBEr • modern • Buhlman

Focus, Phasing, and Perspective

Most movement is accomplished simply by our energy body following our primary focus.

Creating an Energy Bridge

The Energy Bridge (The Beam)

The focus of our attention directs the flow into a beam of light that opens up an energy bridge. When strong enough, we travel across it to whatever we’re focusing on.

See “The Energy Bridge” in communication.php.

Everything is drawn together as frequency increases, until we are all one with the Source. Focusing on a specific person or place causes this same response to a lesser degree, drawing us there. The increase in frequency due to our attention directed at something draws us to it, just as two people in focused communication become closer by their increased openness to each other. More accurately, both consciousnesses are drawn to a frequency where they are innately closer to each other.

See also “Raising Frequency Together” in communication.php.

Within the Pure Essence, our senses are clear and vast and we travel upon them. We travel upon thought and sensation.

You travel the beam — it’s a tunnel/vortex, an opening!
Light shines through it!

In the higher worlds, to think, to wish, and to act, are inseparable from one another. . . .

Every time you think . . . you have created in the ether a “line of least resistance” which will favor your efforts in the chosen direction. This magnetic path is a canal along which all vibrations of a similar nature will flow. . . . This is what happens: The electronic particles of the ether which are set in motion, after having passed a portion of their energy in the desired direction, will return to you. The magnetic field thus formed will attract, by affinity, all other systems of a similar nature. Soon a veritable world will gravitate about you, attracting by sympathy all sorts of living entities of a similar quality. (Yram 117-118)PAPOBEr • Yram

Yram is describing an energy bridge. He says that things related to our thoughts “gravitate about you”. This is essentially the same as movement to the astral frequency corresponding to our thoughts and feelings, except the only movement is a change in frequency. This is the idea of like attracts like. This is another way of looking at the way worlds spring up around us in response to our thought.

See “Traveling on Beams” below for more.

Focus Projection

My earlier perceptions of the opening of an energy bridge I called “Focus Projection”, as I would focus intently on a distant point and feel that I was being drawn there.

Outside the physical body, which keeps us planted in place, our focus of attention draws us to the object of our focus, “enlarging” the object before us, just as walking closer to something in the physical enlarges it in our perception.

In the Physical

In the physical, when we focus deeply on something before us, it feels like we’re actually opening up a tunnel of visual attention to it. The stronger the focus, the more it feels like we are there, that we have become that focus. Our attention takes its shape and clarity increases. We see the essence in it and feel drawn towards it. We begin to feel like we are already moving so it’s easy to push it over the threshold and get up and walk over to it.

Visual field when dim. It all feels flat and distant.
With Deep Attention, we flow into it, become it.
An attention-map of the visual field with
no specific focus.
A focus on the cabin opens an energy bridge,
draws us closer.

With Deep Attention, I looked at the wall of a distant house and it got really clear there and almost rippled like the surface of water. I felt myself being pulled there.

You move there, become by forgetting where you are. Ripples and clarity both.

Vision is so clear, it pulls.

On LSD or psilocybin, with all my mental structures melted, I’m powerfully in the now, and the extremely large visual attention makes where I’m looking so heavy with my attention that it’s pulling me there. It is more easy to let go of where I am and physically go there (if possible). Looking at the top of a tree with great concentration made it feel as if I were up there among the branches.

Our attention forms an energy bridge to its focus. The stronger our attention on it, the stronger the bridge is, pulling us together. Like attracts like, and our attention on it makes it like us.

See also “Visual Attention and Becoming” in fields-of-perception.php.

In the Astral

In the astral, movement is the result of desire. When we project some of our focus to something distant, the weight of that focus pulls us to it. Our attention and desire jumps part of our focus somewhere and the astral body follows it as if it’s a gravitational force. The speed of movement depends on the amount of attention — we may drift or shoot to that new spot.

It can also happen without any sense of movement. When the place we are projecting to has more of our attention than where we started, then that is where we are. Looking very closely at the process, as the weight of your focus shifts forward to the new location, it reaches a point where the new location has more of you than the old, and you then feel the new place is where you are.

But the move isn’t yet complete. The final step is forgetting where we were. As we forget, we lose our hold on being where we were previously focused and appear in the place where we are now focused. This is made easier by the shortened context of the dream state. Only by letting go of where we were can we entirely go to where we want to be.

If we’re in a conversation and lose interest and look away, if we were not stuck in place within a physical body, we’d drift away in that direction.

See “Dual-Consciousness, Shifting Back and Forth” in obes.php for dual consciousness between the recently exited OBE and the physical. This is also related to “Active Projection: Specific Search” in holographic-mind.php.

Whenever I would look at a person to wonder what they were thinking, it was like a zoom-up, exactly like through a zoom lens, and I was there. But it seemed that part of me—I’ll call it my mind—was still where I had been, several yards away from my body. When I wanted to see someone at a distance, it seemed like part of me, kind of like a tracer, would go to that person. . . . If something happened anyplace in the world I could just be there. (Moody 54)LALresearcher • modern • Moody

It is a common occurrence in heaven for persons to appear to be present in a place where their look is fixed or is terminated, even when this place is far away from where they really are. This presence is called the presence of internal sight. (Swedenborg 90)H&HOBEr • Christianity • Swedenborg

Traveling on Beams

Similar to being pushed by currents or magnets, traveling along a beam of light, sound, or force is another way people describe being moved in the astral. Someone uses the properties of the energy bridge to form a connection and pull someone to them.

This is where the science fiction idea of the tractor beam (short for “attractor beam”) comes from. Spiritual truths often inspire science fiction.

Case 9:

S: I’m being pulled along by a magnet and I just enjoy the ride. . . . I am riding on a wave . . . a beam of light. . . . It’s similar to the bands of a radio with someone turning the dial and finding the right frequency for me. . . . I must go with the wave bands of light . . . the waves have direction and I’m flowing with it. It’s easy. They do it all for you. . . . My mind is in tune with the movement. . . . I flow with the resonance. . . . The wave beam . . . vibrates. . . . I’m on a line, like a homing beacon of sound and light . . . and it’s part of my own tonal pattern—my frequency. . . . Think of a monster tuning fork inside a flashing strobe light. . . . We have energy—within an energy field. So, it isn’t just the lines we travel on . . . we generate energy ourselves. (Newton 43-44)JoShypnosis • modern • Newton

Other subjects, who are also disposed toward linear descriptions, speak of traveling along directional force lines which have the spatial properties of a grid system. One person called them “vibrational strings.” (Newton 74)

Case 4:

S: I think something is . . . pulling me into my proper level of travel and trying to relax me, too. . . . I’m hearing sounds. An . . . echo . . . of music . . . musical tingling . . . wind chimes . . . vibrating with my movements . . . so relaxing . . . the waves of musical notes here are so beautiful . . . bells . . . strings . . . such tranquility. (Newton 21-22)

Wave Interference Patterns

I had an opportunity to hang out with some wolves in 2025. At one point they began to howl. I howled along and matched the tone of the one next to me. By varying the tone up and down from his, it caused acoustic beat rhythms to move from me to him or him to me. After a few seconds of this, he came up and licked my face.

In acoustics, a beat is the interference pattern produced by two sounds of slightly different frequencies. This interference pattern can be heard as a third rhythm produced by fluctuations in volume. In the following, the red and green wave begin in tune. The frequency of the green wave is then gradually increased by 25%. The interference causes the blue wave, which is the sum of the red and green waves:

The blue is the sum of the two waves.
Now listen to the result

The difference in frequencies produces the throbbing you hear — this is from the combination blue wave above. The beat increases in speed as the two frequencies move apart and decreases as they come together. Given a steady red wave, a green wave of slightly higher frequency creates a beat frequency moving one direction, while a slightly lower frequency creates one moving in the other direction. It’s possible these additive directional waves can result in movement.

Additionally, it’s possible that a stronger wave can pull a weaker one into entrainment with it. I’ve read many accounts of state-raising vibrations in the astral. It may be that the slight difference can draw one through near-entrainment into entrainment. For example, I match your frequency, and then raise it slightly. Yours resonates with this and is pulled along with mine. Continuing like this, I could raise someone’s frequency up to another level.

Movement Due to Changes in Frequency

Sometimes “movement” consists of raising or lowering one’s frequency. This can be done with waves that feel like a cleansing or an infusion of energy. This can precede or be part of the sensation of traveling along a beam.

I hear a very high tone. I get the impression that it’s associated with the energy wave I’m traveling on. Now I’m going through the cleansing process again. It’s very energizing. I see a circle at the end of the energy beam. The circle is the crystal-clear energy ball I traveled in before. Now I’m traveling very rapidly; suddenly my body is in an expanded state of awareness. . . .

The tone that I heard has changed to a lower pitch; it has a special energy. The sound is elusive and hard to describe, almost like a silent sound, or something you’re not really hearing with your ears. It seems to have to do with traveling. It also seems like an energy that is being generated to tune into my energy—and to change it? (McKnight 177-178)

I’m going to be sent back into myself. I’m going to receive an infusion of energy. I hear that sound again; it starts low and is getting higher. It seems to be my own frequency getting attunement from outside myself.

Now I’m going to be put on an energy beam to be beamed back down. The sound is intensifying. Everything is starting to get dark and hazy, and it seems as if I’m moving. But I feel as if I’m standing completely still at the same time. (long pause) I feel as if I’m back in myself now! (McKnight 186)

I’m beginning to pick up that silent sound again. The vibration is speeding up. I feel as though I am moving rapidly. I’m getting into the right vibration. (McKnight 187)CJOBEr • modern • McKnight

Being Pulled Inward

When we raise our frequency, we move inward, up the stream towards the Source. The feeling of inward motion may be due to our decreasing size at higher frequencies.

As I increased my personal energy frequency, I automatically moved inward within the interior, nonphysical regions of the universe. (Buhlman 30)

When we make a request to raise our vibratory rate or move inward, our consciousness automatically propels us into a higher-frequency area. . . .

I feel an immediate sensation of rapid inner motion—I’m being drawn within a vacuum deep within myself. The sensation of motion is so intense that I shout “Stop!” Instantly I stop moving and realize that I’m in a new environment. I am outdoors in a beautiful parklike setting. (Buhlman 31)

ABtBOBEr • modern • Buhlman

Spirals and Cones

Many describe pyramid-like or cone-like shapes that energize and raise the frequency of those within it. I believe the cone shape amplifies smaller, higher frequency patterns into lower frequencies, thus helping one increase their own frequency of consciousness.

See also “Rising Frequency, Diminishing Size” in communication.php.

I am joining the circle, sitting between two of the helpers. It is a wonderful feeling. There is so much love, and I can feel this energy going through me. . . .

What I see coming up from this circle is energy that is moving in a spiral. There is a circular motion, going up in a cone shape. . . . This cone is building up around us. . . .

I sense that we are going to travel into this spiral of energy. This will be our means of travel. Now I am in this spiral.

There are very strong vibrations here. Looking straight up through the center, I can see the earth. This is a special kind of energy beam that we will be traveling on. (McKnight 86-87)

Now we are coming back up through the spiral. It has been a great experience. . . .

That is a sign of greatness—when you are in the presence of someone who makes you feel so good about yourself. It is almost that another’s high level brings you into the experience of your own highest level. (McKnight 94-95)CJOBEr • modern • McKnight

George: “I become aware that I am dreaming. I remember that I want to see Jesus and so I sit down and begin to meditate. I concentrate on the top of my head, at the crown chakra. Suddenly, instead of Jesus coming to me, it now feels as if I am being taken to Him. I have the feeling of incredible speed, as if I am being shot out of the universe at such a remarkable rate that it is impossible to describe. . . . This sensation of speed becomes so great that I awaken.” . . .

As [George] lay in bed, he felt the exact same sensation of energy in his physical body as he had felt in the lucid dream. He was amazed to discover this type of “energy transfer” from his dream body to his physical body. . . . He closed his eyes and felt again the original sensation of shooting through the universe at the same incredible rate of speed. Then he opened his eyes a few moments later, and felt as if the whole universe were bearing down on him with incredible speed. . . . The energy itself felt like a large cone-shaped field over his head, falling directly onto his head like a giant waterfall. I have had numerous experiences like this of my own. (Kelzer 248-249)tSatSLDer • modern • Kelzer

Perhaps by altering spacetime into a cone shape, a constant movement can be established. Maybe this is the nature of the great flow into us from the Source.

The World Moves

Places Come to You

Outside the physical, traveling can feel like the scenery is coming to you. Without the usual physical body senses associated with motion, it can seem as though scenery is rushing past us while we are standing still.

As we moved the wall really passed through our thin substance, instead of the latter passing through the wall—that’s the real secret of it. (Panchadasi 31)AWunknown • New Thought (Theosophy) • Atkinson

I thought about floating upward. I felt the top of my head rubbing against the headboard of our bed. The headboard had begun to slide downward!

I could actually feel the surface of the headboard moving away from me, or was I moving away from it? (Taylor 16)STOBEr • modern • Taylor

Sense of Direction

What Initiates Movement

Pulled by Desire

The Astral Body’s Responsiveness to Thought

Thought follows desire, and can also trigger new desires. Our will is our permission to follow desire.

This astral body is, as ever, intensely impressionable by any thought or suggestion involving desire, though in some the desires which most readily awaken a response in it may be somewhat higher than in others. (Leadbeater 29)Dclairvoyant • Theosophy • Leadbeater

Whereas in the physical state action follows thought, here they are one and the same. . . . One gradually appreciates the existence of thought as a force in itself rather than as a trigger or catalyst. It is primarily an emotional thought force, which is gradually molded into coherent action. It is the thought of movement that creates the action. (Monroe 182)JOotBOBEr • modern • Monroe

Motion is provided by your mind. You have to will yourself into motion, to change direction, and to stop. ToPOBEr • modern • Bruce

Everything I do is so easy. I only have to think of running, and I am away, moving like a gazelle up the hill. (Roads 59)IaTROBEr, LDer • modern • Roads

This reminds me of my experiences with LSD. Living fully in the moment, a thought to run turns naturally into joyous running.

You will be amazed at the response which follows your thoughts. . . . Most of the time . . . even before you can complete a thought, you have already attained what you are thinking about. . . .

The subconscious Will can bring about the result before the conscious thought is completed. . . . The more one projects . . . the longer one remains in the astral—the more his conscious Will becomes its own master again. (Muldoon 287)PotABOBEr • Spiritualism • Muldoon

The knowledge of how to do something is applied instantly to any desire. The empowerment of a desire takes only a moment to focus on — far less time than articulating it in words.

“I wished I could go down there [to a city below me] and find someone who could give me directions.

“Almost immediately I noticed myself slowing down. . . . Even as the idea occurred to me—as though thought and motion had become the same thing.” (Ritchie and Sherrill, 1978, p.38-39) (Gibbs 264)JoNDE-JGresearcher • modern • Gibbs

Farther down the corridor was one of the heavy metal doors that led to the outside. I hurried toward it. Even if I had missed the train, I’d find some way of getting to Richmond!

Almost without knowing it I found myself outside, racing swiftly along, traveling faster in fact that I’d ever moved in my life. It wasn’t as cold as it had been earlier in the evening—felt neither cold nor hot, actually.

Looking down I was astonished to see not the ground, but the tops of mesquite bushes beneath me. Already Camp Barkeley seemed to be far behind me as I sped over the dark frozen desert. My mind kept telling me that what I was doing was impossible, yet . . . it was happening.

A town flashed beneath me. . . .

An extremely broad river was below me now. There was a long, high bridge, and on the far bank the largest city I had come to yet. I wished I could go down there and find someone who could give me directions.

Almost immediately I noticed myself slowing down. . . .

A man came briskly walking. At least, I thought, I could find out from him what town this was and in what direction I was heading. Even as the idea occurred to me—as though thought and motion had become the same thing—I found myself down on the sidewalk, hurrying along at the stranger’s side. (Ritchie 38-39)RFTNDEr • modern • Ritchie

I seem to be able to fly to a location or “blink out” and “blink in” to wherever my thoughts are focused. (Taylor 87)STOBEr • modern • Taylor

Two elements in my present state are particularly significant to me, when I compare it to physical life. For one thing, my psychological and “physical” mobility is astonishing, and my sense of freedom feels, at least, unlimited. In the beginning I found this disconcerting, for my reality at any given time followed experience-organizations of my own making and focus. . . .

A vivid desire of the most momentary nature seemingly transported me from one place to another, with no transition or preparation—exhilarating and unsettling. Countering all of this, however, was the most delightful sense of safety, so that after the first orientations, there is no fear at all. . . .

The knack is to focus consciousness properly in the desired areas. This usually presents little difficulty after a brief preliminary stage. (Roberts 160-161)AJoaAPchanneled • modern • James

The Importance of Controlling Thoughts

In conjunction with this convenient homing instinct that is unaffected by distance, you are faced with a further problem, which is that the automatic navigational system is too accurate. It works by what and of whom you think. Let one small stray thought emerge dominantly for just one microsecond, and your course is deviated. (Monroe 63)JOotBOBEr • modern • Monroe

Guide: “Most physical inhabitants possess little control over their thoughts. . . .

“Thought control and focus are absolutely essential. This is especially true as you explore deeper within the interior of the universe.” (Buhlman 41)

My biggest obstacle was attempting to focus on my experiment. At the moment of separation, my mind would race with unlimited possibilities, and my experiment seemed insignificant compared with the many wonders that were available. . . .

My nonphysical state of consciousness was extremely sensitive and responsive to my slightest thought. . . .

At first I tried focusing my full attention on my hand or arm right after separation. . . . This created a strange sensation of being immersed within myself. Though exhilarating, the end result was not control but a feeling of being mesmerized and then drawn into a sparkling universe of brilliant blue stars. (Buhlman 14)ABtBOBEr • modern • Buhlman

Movement Originates in the Chest

My first sense of movement in my earliest projections was that I willed myself to move by pushing forward. The pushing sensation seemed to originate from my heart region. APCOBEr, LDer • modern • DeGracia

By now I had become quite aware of my mode of locomotion and it was clear that I was not walking. I seemed to be floating, without legs or feet. Movement seemed to result simply by me thinking of moving. And the source of the force for the motion seemed to emanate from my heart or thoracic region. APCOBEr, LDer • modern • DeGracia

Fulfilling Fears and Expectations

We move to the object of our attention. Like proximity, that person/place/thing expands from the star field into our experience. We are provided with whatever we put our attention on. So when we put our attention on a fear, it’s assumed that’s what we want to happen, and so it does.

For example, in the dream state, the waking self might step in and contribute a fear of falling. So we doubt, or we wonder what would happen, or we focus on a past fall. This is then instantly fulfilled. It’s a mechanical process. By simply focusing on the image of the fall, the action becomes inevitable.

I thought, “Good. Now, I will raise myself up with the power of my thoughts.” I used my mind to pull up, and I started forcefully rising up one half foot . . . one foot . . . one and one-half feet. Then I questioned whether it ought to work, since I hadn’t had much luck in the past with this method. That doubt caused me to stop rising, and I started gently bobbing up and down, as if my conflicting beliefs were fighting each other, one pulling me up, the other pushing me down. Then I blacked out.

I whooshed up to the ceiling. . . .

I thought, “Gee, what if I fall from up here?” As soon as the thought crossed my mind, I came crashing down into my physical body and rejoined. I went right into a short, dreamless sleep. In a minute or two I woke up in my physical body. OBEHWOBEr • modern • Peterson

External Causes of Movement

Moved by a Wind or Current

It’s possible to be moved by an external force. Sometimes this is done by guides or our higher selves, and at other times the cause isn’t clear. When this happens, it feels like traveling across a magnetic current, line of force, or being pushed by a strong wind. The sensation of wind is far more common when in the physical or near-physical.

This is something I have encountered many, many times. What happens is it seems like a gust of wind will grab you and pull you along. It is almost as if some kind of magnetic force or something has captured you and is pulling you.

I decided I wanted to see if I could make it all the way to Detroit and visit a girlfriend of mine. As soon as I thought this, and made up my mind that I was going to do it, a strong wind came out of nowhere and began to drag me along. I was thoroughly baffled and had no idea what was going on. Yet this wind pulled me along, backwards, and I remember moving very quickly through the walls of the house outside. I passed houses for a short while and then was being pulled through the forest, passing mostly pine trees. I was wondering if this wind was going to take me all the way to Detroit. For a while I relaxed and let it drag me along.

I wanted to go to a friends (sic) house. . . . I then felt the wind behind my back that had been described in an astral projection book. I remember lifting up but then ending up back in my body. JoATOBEr • modern • Moon

Yram describes the currents as “electro-magnetic currents”. These happen after his “projection by whirlwind” exits.

I . . . mentally called my guides. Soon a whirlwind rushed me clean out of this disagreeable situation. . . .

Travel in these electro-magnetic currents gives the feeling of being borne by a tremendous draught, at a dizzy speed, through a cloudy medium which is generally of a grayish nature, and through rifts in which various landscapes are seen. To be carried through a clear atmosphere is a much rarer occurrence. (Yram 63)

An etheric wind picked me up and carried me away among grey clouds. Lying on my back, without having to make any movement, I had a wonderful feeling of calm and security. . . . I had the feeling that all the knowledge I had ever had was there, ready to manifest itself. I had the feeling that every atom was awake, experiencing a conscious unity of their powers. . . .

I was carried for many miles over country familiar to my childhood. I went through material objects as if they had been imaginary pictures and then, having gone over many details of my youth, the current seemed to slow down and brought me back to my body.

On another occasion I was caught up by one of those magnetic currents during my projection. . . . After seeing a few grimacing faces, I found myself lightly deposited in my own room. . . . I decided to go to a spot on the earth, hundreds of miles away, and passed through the wall of my room. I had hardly done this when I was swept up by a violent whirlwind and carried at a tremendous speed. . . . My astral body began to turn as if doing straight somersaults. (Yram 64-65)PAPOBEr • Yram

A number of times, the motion of travel, which is usually rapid and smooth, has been interrupted by what feels like a violent, hurricanelike gust in the spatiality through which one moves. It is as if you are being blown away by this uncontrolled force, tossed haphazardly around, end over end, like a leaf in a gale. It is impossible to move against this torrent or do anything but let it carry you. Finally, you are tossed near the edge of the current, and you drop out, unharmed. Directed by a Higher Self

It is the supermind’s needs that create movement into unknown areas, often without an immediate conscious awareness of the motivating force. (Monroe 182)JOotBOBEr • modern • Monroe

I let go of the physical. I don’t remember leaving my body, but I do recall the sensation of flying. I seemed to be on “auto-pilot”, flying high and steady. . . .

I looked back over my shoulders, toward the back of my legs. . . .

To my surprise there was an “entity” supporting my legs and feet helping me to fly! I waved at It and It waved back. . . . It released my legs, flew up beside me, and hugged my waist. . . . The entity pointed downward at what looked like Stonehenge. (Taylor 49)

I found myself flying in “auto-pilot” mode again. I looked over my shoulder, and there was my auto-pilot. This time “Otto” (as in “Otto-matic pilot”) did not wait for me to acknowledge his presence. Otto flew up next to me, and hugged me around my waist. . . . I did notice his color and skin pattern kept changing. (Taylor 50)

NOTE: While OB, looking in the mirror

I felt two hands on either side of me gently grabbing my arms. The hands turned me around and pushed/pulled me out through the wall. I saw nothing but blackness. Then I stood in front of an apartment building. I was totally disoriented. (Taylor 52)

Otto floated over to the side of the bed. . . . I couldn’t help but notice the luminescent brilliance of my spiritual friend. The warm angelical glow that emanated from him was awe inspiring. Then, abruptly and without warning, I received mental information. . . .

My guide, my guardian angel, my Otto-matic pilot, I believe is my Higher Self. The being is me, in a higher form of consciousness. (Taylor 85)STOBEr • modern • Taylor

Moved by Others

I knew where I immediately wanted to go. . . . I started to move but this time, rather than feeling a wind gently blow behind me, I felt something push me. Not violently, but different enough for me to become cognisant of the difference. Unlike my previous journey, it felt like I was being taken a long way this time — I felt lots of objects pass through me but couldn’t see anything.

I asked, politely, to be taken to my friend KC’s house. I then felt the wind in the small of my back and was lifted up into the air. . . . I began to feel behind me to see what was causing me to move. I was still blind at this point but I could feel what seemed like a big ‘blob’ behind me. It seemed much bigger than me. I then turned my head to try and look at it. I remember asking, again politely!, (sic) for my sight and then it came.

I was being moved by what looked like a . . . man that looked to be in his thirties. . . .

He kept trying to tell me something. I was too excited however and wouldn’t give him the chance to speak. . . .

Anyway, I asked him why he was taking me ‘somewhere’ and he replied that he just felt like walking (flying?) down a street with a human again.

It was when my arms were back in front of me that I felt something clasping my forearms. I asked: “Who are you?”. There was no reply. I touched *it* with my left hand on what held my right forearm. It felt like somebody else’s forearm. It felt as if someone were behind me, holding both forearms and directing me somewhere (or going along for the ride!).

I asked again who it was. There was a lot of noise or interference, but amongst it all, I heard *it* say: “Stephen” NOTE: the author’s name. JoATOBEr • modern • Moon

Different Speeds of Travel

Speed Depends on Strength of Desire

One’s speed of travel depends on the strength of the desire behind it. This determines the speed at which the new focus enlarges around us. This is only limited by what one believes is possible.

When anyone goes from one place to another . . . he arrives more quickly when he eagerly desires it, and less quickly when he does not. (Swedenborg 136)H&HOBEr • Christianity • Swedenborg

Case 7:

S: I . . . have a sensation of their presence . . . people I knew. . . . We are drifting toward each other, but I am going slower than they are because. . . . I’m uncertain what to do. . . .(Newton 30-31)JoShypnosis • modern • Newton

Traveling at Different Speeds

One can travel at any speed one desires, though several sources break it down roughly into three travel speeds: slow, fast, and instant.

In the context of dreams, we are drawn to speed ranges familiar to our physical experiences, each with their own corresponding rationalizations: walking speed (2-3 MPH), running/gliding speed (6-8 MPH), biking/flying speed (10-20 MPH), car/airplane speed (30-80 MPH), and near instantaneous speed.

There are three different velocities at which the phantom NOTE: astral body travels; First, the natural or normal speed. . . . He merely walks.

Second, the intermediate speed . . . faster than the normal speed, but not fast enough to cause loss of perception. . . .

Third is the supernormal travelling velocity—a speed beyond comprehension. (Muldoon 59)PotABOBEr • Spiritualism • Muldoon

Movement Speed in Higher and Lower Realms

The soul travels at a speed proportionate to the quality of the “pure Energy” in which it finds itself. At the positive extremity of this quality one reaches instantaneousness. Time and space which are so greatly differentiated in this world of ours unify more and more in the greater refinement of other dimensions. . . . Time loses its value and instantaneousness is the ultimate quality of unity. (Yram 83)PAPOBEr • Yram

The denser and darker the extraphysical NOTE: nonphysical atmosphere is, the slower will be the velocity of flight and the greater is the will-power required for the transit of the consciousness. . . . There are, due to the relative quality of thosenes NOTE: thoughts, thick atmospheres where flight is more difficult than on the planetary crust NOTE: the physical world itself. . . . In subtle atmospheres, flight can reach the speed of thought, without the consciousness losing any lucidity. (Vieira 55)PotCOBEr • modern • Vieira

Slow to Medium Speed

Walking

Walking is a physical habit of movement. Just like in waking life, we move around without any attention paid to the individual steps we take.

Whilst the experimenter is merely projecting himself into his own room, strolling about there, walking down to the front door and out into the street, there is no real difference between the acts performed in the astral and those performed in the physical state. (Yram 78)PAPOBEr • Yram

Fast Gliding

This equates roughly to running speed. I believe we shift to gliding here because the act of physically running is a lot more effort and a lot less smooth than walking.

Heel Gliding

I came up with my own way of traveling! It’s similar to riding a bike downhill when you have one foot extended down the whole time. I think I developed this roughly at the time that I started biking to work.

Turbo Speed Running

High Speed

In the Near Realm

These examples of high-speed travel on or near the ground in the OB state. In the dream state this speed is often rationalized as being in a car.

The intermediate speed, in which the subject moves along without effort, [is] faster than the normal speed, but not fast enough to cause loss of perception. When this takes place one does not appear to be moving, but everything seems to be coming toward him, through him, passing him, just as fields and fences seem to “speed backward” when one rides in a fast train. . . .

This intermediate speed enables the subject to cover considerable distances rapidly, without loss of consciousness. (Muldoon 59)PotABOBEr • Spiritualism • Muldoon

In these Dreams . . . new methods of locomotion were open to me. I could glide along the surface of the ground, passing through seemingly solid walls, etc., at a great speed, or I could levitate to a height of about one hundred feet and then glide. (Fox 36)APrOBEr • modern • Fox

Gliding down the street lightly in the air. . . . I wanted to speed up the travel tremendously so I could move further away from my physical body. All at once I felt a tremendous amount of power inside my body, looking at the trees at the end of the street as they blew right past me along with the telephone wires too. The way the images blew past me as I burned into the wind was incredible. . . . I could even feel the air ripping thru (sic) my body bringing me cold chills up and down my spine. TVOSOBEr • modern • Warner

My trip home was a blur. I began moving at tremendous speed, now that I realized I could, and I was only vaguely aware of trees rushing below me. It was difficult to distinguish the actual places that we passed, for almost as soon as they came into view on the horizon, we had passed them. . . . (Richelieu 45)ASJOBEr • modern (Theosophy) • Richelieu

(Ritchie 38)RFTNDEr • modern • Ritchie

I finally swung up out of the body mentally yelling, I want to see Dr. Gordon!

You “think” of the person at the end of your destination—never a place, but a person. . . . In a few moments, you are there. You can watch the landscape move under you if you wish, but it’s a little disconcerting when you rush headlong toward a building or tree and go right through it. In order to avoid such traumas, forget about seeing during the traveling process. (Monroe 63)JOotBOBEr • modern • Monroe

In the Astral

Starting from the void:

Then came a whoosh! Suddenly, as if we had been waiting for a kind of sorting process to take place, I was sucked further into the darkness by an unseen and undefined power. . . . I was flying upright, moving at warp speed, like a comet shooting out of nowhere. I sensed that I was going faster than any man-made aircraft could fly, but without the physical effects of flight or the pull of gravity. Nor did I have any sense of the temperature. . . . I was probably flying for only a fraction of a second. (Fenimore 93-94)BtDNDEr • modern • Fenimore

See “Rationalizing Astral Phenomena” in nature-of-dreams.php to see how we rationalize different travel speeds in physical terms.

Effects of High Speed Travel

These changes may be related to crossing an energy bridge while traveling. The energy bridge is essentially what initiates travel — by focusing attention on a person or place we create the bridge and draw ourselves and our focus together through it.

Light Dims with Speed

Case 15:

S: It’s never black here . . . the light . . . just contracts to darker shades because of my speed. When I slow down things get brighter. (others confirm this observation). . . . I have slowed way down—things are different. . . . More clearly defined. (Newton 79-80)JoShypnosis • modern • Newton

Speed blurs and darkens one’s surroundings.

Could this be why the tunnel at death is dark? People sometimes see it before they begin to move through it. Maybe the speed is a stable state within the tunnel.

Space Curves with Speed

Case 14

S: Distances are . . . unlimited . . . endless space . . . forever. . . . But when I begin to really move it changes. . . . Everything remains formless . . . but when I am . . . gliding faster. . . . I see I’m moving around inside a gigantic bowl—turned upside down. I don’t know where the rims of the bowl are, or even if any exist.

Dr. N: Then movement gives you the sense of a spherical spirit world?

S: Yes, but it’s only a feeling of . . . enclosed uniformity. . . . Although everything appears to go on straight when my soul is drifting—that changes to . . . a feeling of roundness when I am moving fast on a line of contact. . . . Towards a specific destination. . . . Because with speed the lines seem to . . . bend. They curve in a more obvious direction for me and give me less freedom of movement. . . .

Dr. N: By less freedom, do you mean less personal control?

S: Yes . . . it’s like I’m in a current. (Newton 73-74)

Case 6:

S: It’s as if. . . . I’m drifting along on . . . pure white sand . . . which is shifting around me . . . and I’m under a giant beach umbrella—with brightly colored panels—all vaporized, but banded together, too. (Newton 28)JoShypnosis • modern • Newton

The curvature of space above is related to the tunnel effect of increasing frequency.

Many subjects mentally traveling from one location to another in the spirit world will tell me the space around them is like a sphere. . . . But then they will add that the spirit world is not enclosed because it is “limitless.” (Newton 97)JoShypnosis • modern • Newton

This is explained in detail in “The Curvature of the Opening Tunnel” in ndes.php.

Instantaneous Travel

Instantaneous Travel

Consciousness can travel anywhere instantly. Traveling through space is a physical carryover.

In fact, there are likely several factors at play. The lower the frequency, the denser the atmosphere, the more difficult fast and instantaneous travel is. At higher frequencies, there is also a difference between thinking of being at a place (instantaneous travel) and thinking of going to a place (travel through space). A more physically-focused self won’t consider instantaneous travel to be an option and so will always move through space to get there.

Instantaneous travel happens via rapid phasing. As with any travel, you have to want to go with such certainty that you are willing to let go of where you are.

In the dream state a physically-focused self may bridge space in some very unique ways (see “Scene Transformations and Transitions” in into-dreams.php).

In out-of-body states, however, consciousness can travel faster than light—often, in fact, instantaneously. (Roberts 313)UR2channeled • modern • Seth

I sent out my thoughts to [my friend]. Within the space of a few seconds of earth time he was walking in through the door. . . . If we think ourselves into a certain place we shall travel with the rapidity of that thought, and that is as near instantaneous as it is possible to imagine. (Borgia 23)

In the first place, it was necessary to have confidence, and in the second, our concentration of thought must not be a half-hearted affair. To borrow an earthly allusion, we “wish ourselves” there, wherever it may be, and there we shall find ourselves! For the first few occasions it may be required to make something of a conscious effort; afterwards we can move ourselves whithersoever we wish—one might almost say, without thinking! . . .

Ruth and I were to go alone, while [Edwin] would remain on the grass. We were just to think that we wished to be beside yonder trees. We looked at one another with a great deal of merriment. . . . Edwin said: “Off you go!” His remark must have supplied the requisite stimulus, for I took Ruth’s hand, and the next thing we knew we found ourselves standing beneath the trees! . . .

Casting our eyes whence we had just come, we saw Edwin waving his hand to us. (Borgia 41-42)LWUchanneled • modern • Benson

My mind went back to my husband, and in a flash I was standing back in the living room. . . . The phone rang, and I was instantly in the kitchen next to the telephone. It was amazing. Astral Movement

Relative Position and Motion

Relative Motion

The Law of Relative Motion: Motion is relative to the focus of attention, regardless of the focus’s own motion.

Group Travel and Relative Position

The Law of Relative Position: When focusing on a person or group, you approach and remain in position relative to them, even if they are moving.

Because of this, groups traveling together stay in relative position to each other.

I likely engage in group travel several times every night in the dream state, whether it be with just Buttercup or a larger group of people. I typically rationalize that we are in a vehicle big enough to fit the number of people traveling. Larger group travel is rationalized as a plane, bus, ship, etc. All these people stay in relative position to each other, as a group, and can engage in activities while they travel together.

I mentioned to Edwin that as we wished, all three of us, to be together, then must we not all wish to be at the same place, and must we not have some very definite locality in mind upon which to fasten our thoughts? He replied that . . . we should automatically remain in close contact with each other, since we had voiced the wish and intention of doing so. (Borgia 41)LWUchanneled • modern • Benson

Joining Group Travel

A focus on a group that is already traveling will draw one into a position next to them. Usually this is outside the rationalized vehicle — perhaps there has to be permission to get closer, or perhaps the idea of entering a moving vehicle is just too incongruous.

The Law of Relative Motion ensures one reaches the group quickly.

Outside the Vehicle
Inside the Vehicle

Activities During Group Travel

The Law of Continuing Motion: Once travel to a destination is initiated, it continues even while engaged in other activities. It takes a specific desire to stop moving or change the destination.

Leaving Group Travel

You can leave group travel whenever you like.

Interfering with Movement

You cannot interfere with another’s movement.

Inertia

Inertia — A Background Travel Process

Inertia is an object’s resistance to changes in its state of motion, based on its mass. Momentum is a quantity of motion, calculated as mass times velocity. In the nonphysical, there is no mass, so neither concept directly applies to nonphysical objects. However, a similar concept that does exist to consciousness is setting up patterns of thought in our attention that we set in motion and then leave running while we focus elsewhere. These are like background processes in a computer. They continue running until attention is paid to change them. This includes the intention of motion.

Nonphysical inertia is the result of setting some amount of attention on traveling, then turning the larger part of our attention on something else. The attention on traveling either continues as a background process, or slowly diminishes as our primary attention is phased in a new direction. This background travel process is evident in that we can focus on different activities while traveling.

In some cases, the appearance of momentum and inertia in the nonphysical may also be due to the physical expectation of momentum. our memory of inertia and momentum may direct objects under our control (including ourselves) to follow these laws. We only notice oddities when it breaks the physical pattern.

See “Attention and Habit” in thoughts.php.

There is a type of momentum in astral form that causes most of the problems. This causes you to continue moving for a while, after you decide to stop. This may take you through a wall or a ceiling etc. This impetus is caused by the thought you used to cause the motion. If it is too strong, or too prolonged for the action, you will move too quickly or too far. Only practise (sic) teaches you how to get about with any degree of accuracy and grace. ToPOBEr • modern • Bruce

Initial Difficulties with Movement

Many people have motion problems in their first few projections. Simply getting across a room in the right direction, can be a major accomplishment. This lack of control is simply because they are unfamiliar with astral form. . . . When you project in real time, you are just a point of consciousness with a poorly constructed etheric shell surrounding it. Motion is provided by thought..

It really is quite a comical process, learning astral motion. I remember learning to move about my home town, in my youth. I would start by trying to navigate through my house, usually ending up stuck in the roof, for a while. Then I would run down the road, trying to build up speed and take off like a plane. I would get airborne for a while, but could never quite clear the roof tops of the surrounding houses. I would often float unintentionally into strange houses, blundering about like a drunk in zero G. I seemed to be endlessly apologizing to all these strangers in passing, as I floated in and out of their houses. ToPOBEr • modern • Bruce

This is likely due to a focus on travel itself, rather than the destination.

Flying

We can fly in the astral. But when the waking mind is involved, we need to be able to overcome the physical expectation of the gravity.

Each physical law we learn is a habitual limitation our waking selves bring with us into the astral — limitations we need to unlearn to open up our possibilities again.

Flight Triggers

The Dream Self will fly, naturally, without thinking about it. In fact, walking about with legs would not occur to us in that focus. But in the waking self focus, it takes lucidity (or stress) for us to realize that we can fly.

Lucidity

One of the first things I usually do when I become lucid is to fly. It can take some experimentation to figure out how it works.

Stress

I think this may be a sort of stress-induced lucidity; inspiration communicated from the Dream Self to the waking self.

How to Fly — Overcoming the Gravity Expectation

Here are some ways I’ve come up with to overcome the expectation gravity to start flying and stay flying.

She was a guest at a party. In the dream, her brother-in-law explained to several men present her method of flying and asked her to demonstrate it, which she did. They discussed it critically. However, one gentleman stepped forward and offered an explanation to the puzzle. . . .

“You know that the law of gravity has no power over you here. If the law is suspended, you can fly at will. Have confidence in yourself, and you need not fear.” (Garfield 163-164)CDLDer • modern • Garfield

Focus on Rising

We can jump and use our attention to expand the upward motion indefinitely.

Bounding

Bounding is a form of the “Focus on Rising” technique of flight.

Bounding is taking larger and larger leaps that sometimes results in flying. The thrill of the large leaps becomes your focus as your desire to go higher overrides the believed limits of gravity. It’s a transitional state between your desire to fly and the waking mind’s expectation of gravity.

At first you may find something very much like gravity affecting you. You may get yourself into the air only to find yourself slowly arcing back to earth again. If you persevere you’ll find yourself moving in a series of short flight hops. This is caused partly by habit. . . . You sink back to earth when your motion causing mental action falters. This causes your flight impetus to stop and the gravity habit then pulls you down. . . . There is NO gravity affecting you in astral form. ToPOBEr • modern • Bruce

The Belly-Up Trick

I’ve noticed on some occasions that my desire causes me to pulled forward by my chest or belly, as if the motive of forward motion comes from that location. Thus, turning belly up can put that motive force to use against the expectation of gravity.

Other Techniques

If you find it difficult to fly. . . . PRETEND YOU ARE WALKING UP STAIRS. . . . If I take big steps upward, I will continue to ascend. APCOBEr, LDer • modern • DeGracia

Energetic Movements

Stretching

In Monroe’s earlier experiences, he described phasing as a sort of stretching of yourself towards your destination. By stretching towards something, you are pushing more and more of your attention there.

To give yourself motion toward your destination, employ a total Second Body NOTE: astral body version of the “stretch”. . . . You may move fast or slowly, depending upon the effort of this stretching action. The harder you “stretch,” the faster you go. At your destination, you will automatically stop stretching without realizing it.

To return, apply a similar method. Think of your physical body, reach out and stretch, and you will return promptly. (Monroe 226)JOotBOBEr • modern • Monroe

It seems that each time I stretch my legs, I go a long distance, like having seven-league boots. Every time I put a leg out, I seem to span a universe! They’re showing me how to completely span universes. . . .

As we go long distances it’s as though I’m exercising my ability to step into other dimensions. I have to stretch. I have to let my mind stretch—realizing that there are no limits. (McKnight 102)CJOBEr • modern • McKnight

Skipping

(When we want to move from one pattern to another, we . . . pull a skip.) (Monroe 146)FJOBEr • modern • Monroe

“Long distance” travel across galaxies is done like stone skipping across water. No attempt is made to go through The Matrix which is the universe, but rather, to “skip around” on it. (Walsch 309)CWG3channeled • modern • Walsch

The Boundaries — Crossing Realms

The following is largely focused on the astral frequencies of consciousness, but it applies to higher frequencies as well.

Moving Between Planes

Tuning to Planes by Energy Bodies

The following applies to those still connected to a physical body.

Every man has within himself matter belonging to every one of these planes, a vehicle corresponding to each, in which he can function when he learns how this may be done. So that to pass from one plane to another is to change the focus of consciousness from one of the vehicles to another. . . . Each of these bodies responds only to the vibrations of its own plane; and so while the man’s consciousness is focused in his astral body, he will perceive the astral world only, just as while our consciousness is using only the physical senses we perceive nothing but this physical world. Transferring Between Bodies

Upward Travel — Leaving Behind Bodies

Each body is a layer of individuality, a separation of self from the rest of reality.

“There are many higher planes, and to get back to God, to reach the plane where His spirit resides, you have to drop your garment NOTE: body each time until your spirit is truly free,” states one of Whitton’s subjects. (Talbot 301)HUscientific, researcher • modern • Talbot

Downward Travel

Rejoining Bodies

The following is during the return trip from the mental to the astral during an OBE. Richelieu leaves his astral body in a sleeping state while in the mental focus and returns to it upon refocusing in the astral.

We set about our return journey in the same way as when we came, and after a moment I seemed to wake up in my astral body . . . with the two astral helpers “on guard”. (Richelieu 181)ASJOBEr • modern (Theosophy) • Richelieu

Li (channeled): After an endless time spent in this sacred bliss, I began to feel a pull at the very center of my essence. . . . I let myself be carried by that cord back through endless levels of light to a Heaven World that is much closer to the Earth. As I drew nearer to my destination, I felt my energy condense, until I was once again wearing the form familiar to me at this level. I found myself walking in a Heavenly garden. Creating New Bodies

Those who have permanently shed their lower bodies, such as those who have rejoined their reincarnating self, need to draw around them new temporary bodies when traveling to slower, outer frequencies. This is done by drawing the matter of that specific subplane around them. Otherwise there would be no way to interact there — nothing with which to pick up or send signals.

Those visiting in dreams, OBEs, NDEs, and other mystical states still have those bodies but are tuning into different ones to perceive on those planes.

If you wish to pass down again from, let us say the fourth to the first sphere, it is necessary for a permanent resident to call upon the atoms contained within the core of the orange—the permanent atom—in order to effect that change. This requires a much greater effort of will . . . for he must draw round his astral body yet again a new skin relative to the astral matter of this sphere in which he wishes to function. (Richelieu 141)ASJOBEr • modern (Theosophy) • Richelieu

When a person lives on a higher plane he also has the ability to move into a lower plane and to construct a body that will function on that plane. (Kubis and Macy 54)CBtLITC, OBEr • modern (Theosophy) • Kubis & Macy

Moving Between Astral Subplanes

Changing Our Focus

Acharya: In these schools the astral entity is shown the way in which to transport himself from one level to another—the change being brought about through an effort of will made in a particular way. . . . Our astral bodies include matter similar to that of all the spheres and it is only a question of making active the atoms in our bodies relative to the sphere concerned, to enable us to function fully in the sphere chosen. . . . The life expressed at the different spheres is separate and to all intents and purposes self-contained, in exactly the same way that life in England is separate and different from life in India. (Richelieu 75-76)

Acharya: You are able to travel to any sphere of the astral world up or down merely be exercising your will-power, and, in accordance with the sphere to which you go, these particles of your astral body become active and make such journeys possible. (Richelieu 140)ASJOBEr • modern (Theosophy) • Richelieu

We all of us have certain powers which are magnified as we pass from sphere to sphere in the progressive steps of our spiritual development. And one of the principal of these powers is that of matching ourselves, of adjusting ourselves, to our surroundings. . . . In the spirit world we call it an equalizing of our personal vibrational rate. (Borgia 193)LWUchanneled • modern • Benson

To step through this gossamer veil that separates your outer consciousness from its Full Inner Power and Activity is but a state of thought and feeling. . . .

The knowing of the vastness of Eternity is within your grasp. To enter a Higher Sphere than your physical world in full consciousness is but an adjusting or changing of your consciousness. (King 91-92)

As we step from this sphere of activity into another higher, that one becomes just as Real as this is. It is simply a different state of consciousness we have entered into. (King 95)IADchanneled • Theosophy • Germain

Movement Through Frequencies, Not Space

Perhaps the most important quality of consciousness is its frequency. The frequency determines the world we perceive. At physical frequencies, we see the physical world. As our frequency increases, the physical world becomes foggy and our perception instead crosses into the next frequency domain — the etheric. Here we perceive energies related to physical world — electricity, gravity, radio waves. Increasing further we lose sight of that and tune into the lower astral world and up through the middle and upper astral in stages. The scenery, light, and feeling changes in stages as we our frequency increases.

Astral “distance” is a measure primarily of differences in frequency of consciousness, and secondarily of our specific focus.

My nonphysical body possessed an inherent vibrational quality. . . .

The vibrational frequency (density) of my nonphysical body seemed to determine whether the . . . room was visible to me. . . .

For me to be able to view my normal physical surroundings, my internal vibrational rate had to be relatively dense, or slow. (Buhlman 15-17)

As I increased my personal energy frequency, I automatically moved inward within the interior, nonphysical regions of the universe. . . .

When we alter our personal energy frequency we automatically move to the nonphysical energy level of the universe that corresponds. (Buhlman 30-31)

Each physical object around us exists as a multiple-frequency object. . . .

Everything around us is multidimensional, simultaneously existing in different energy frequencies of the universe. Yet all these energy dimensions coexist in the same time and space . . . each within its own frequency band. (Buhlman 52)

When we are out-of-body our nonphysical form is not static, as it may first appear, but is actually an expansive energy system that fluctuates in its internal energy frequency. (Buhlman 63)ABtBOBEr • modern • Buhlman

After death it does not take time to go through space, for example. Space does not exist in terms of distance. . . . There are barriers, but they are mental or psychic barriers. For example, there are intensities of experience that are interpreted in your reality as distance in miles.

After death you may find yourself in a training center. Now theoretically, this center could be in the middle of your present living room, in physical space, but the distance between you and the members of your family still living . . . would have nothing to do with space as you know it. You would be more separated from them than if you were, say, on the moon.

You could perhaps change your own focus of attention away from the center, and theoretically see the room and its inhabitants; and yet still this distance that has nothing to do with miles would be between you. (Roberts 133)SSchanneled • modern • Seth

An out-of-body consciousness may also enter other physically attuned realities: those operating “at different frequencies than your own.” (Roberts 314)UR2channeled • modern • Seth

Seth is referring to the astral planes.

Upon the instant of passing, of which you will remember, I was fully conscious, when I arose from my bed in response to a very definite urge. At that moment I was in the spirit world. The two worlds, then, must interpenetrate one another. But as I moved away under the support and able guidance of Edwin, I was conscious of moving in no definite direction. I might have been travelling up, or down, or along. Movement, there certainly was. . . .

The transition from one realm to another is gradual. . . . It would be difficult to assign to any particular locality the designation of boundary. That is exactly how the boundaries of our own realm are situated. They seem to melt almost imperceptibly into one another. (Borgia 59)LWUchanneled • modern • Benson

The Experience of Changing Focus

“Now,” [the Master] said, “Passing from the lowest sphere NOTE: the near realm to the one less dense than this is quite a simple matter, only requiring an effort of will for it to become immediately effective. . . . You will not feel anything, but will notice that the scene around you changes gradually. The walls that seem to enclose us in this room will appear to melt, the furniture with which you are surrounded will slowly become vague and misty.” . . . In less time than it takes me to record, we were standing in the open air, in a small field, and in the distance there was what looked like a typical English village. “Now listen,” he said, “and you will hear very distinctly a distant rumble. That is the roar of London town and it can just be heard because you are only one subplane or sphere away from what is the actual astral counterpart of the physical London you know so well. This is the second sphere of the astral world and you can see already that it is very much less material than the densest part of that world.” (Richelieu 88)ASJOBEr • modern (Theosophy) • Richelieu

The environment fades as our perception shifts to pick up a higher frequency of light — one that can pass through it. This is a shifting of attention away from one environment toward another. Attention enlarges. Without attention, something doesn’t exist to us.

My guide now told me to hold his hand again and join with him in willing to pass from this second sphere to the third. . . . At once the scene that surrounded us started to dim and gradually gave place to a new one. Our surroundings were now quite different, for we were standing in an open space, surrounded by what appeared to be dozens of small woods. (Richelieu 90-91)ASJOBEr • modern (Theosophy) • Richelieu

We were moving again. Or rather, the scene in front of us was—changing somehow. Opening up. It was the quality of light that was different, as though the air had suddenly become more transparent, enabling me to see what had apparently been there all along.

Again, it was as if Jesus could reveal only as much as my mind could grasp. . . . Behind, beyond, through all this I began to perceive a whole new realm! . . .

We seemed suddenly to have entered an altogether different dimension, almost another kind of existence. . . . Here was an all-pervading peace. (Ritchie 68-69)RFTNDEr • modern • Ritchie

In his book, The Life Beyond Death, Arthur Ford describes his experience. . . .

“I was floating in the air above my bed. . . . There was a feeling of peace, a sense that all was well. Now I lapsed into a timeless blank. When I recovered consciousness, I found my self floating through space, without effort, without any sense that I possessed a body. . . .

“Now there appeared a green valley with mountains on all sides, illuminated everywhere by a brilliance of light and color impossible to describe. People were coming toward me from all around, people I had known and thought of as “dead.” . . .

“There was one surprise: Some people I would have expected to see here were not present. I asked about them. In the instant of asking a thin transparent film seemed to fall over my eyes. The light grew dimmer, and colors lost their brilliance. I could no longer see those to whom I had been speaking, but through a haze I saw those for whom I had asked. They, too, were real, but as I looked at them, I felt my own body become heavy; earthly thoughts crowded into my mind. It was evident to me that I was being shown a lower sphere. I called to them; they seemed to hear me, but I could not hear a reply. Then it was over. A gentle being who looked like a symbol of eternal youth, but radiated power and wisdom, stood by me. “Don’t worry about them,” he said. “They can come here whenever they want to if they desire it more than anything else.” (Delacour 172-173)GotBresearcher • modern • Delacour

The Being of Light was vibrating. As we moved upward, that vibration increased, and the sound emanating from the Being became louder and higher-pitched. We moved up through dense fields of energy that changed color from dark blue to a whitish blue, at which point we stopped. Then the Being’s pitch lowered and we moved forward. . . . We flew toward a range of majestic mountains, where we dipped down and landed on a plateau. (Brinkley 193-194)SBtLNDEr • modern • Brinkley

Gradually the Earth scene faded away, and up through it loomed a bright, new, beautiful world – beautiful beyond imagination! For half a minute I could see both worlds at once. . . . Finally when the Earth was all gone, I stood in a glory that could only be heaven. ISHNDEr • modern • Yensen

Higher and Lower Versions of the Same Place

The Emotional Shock of Negativity

One day, I found myself on a fairly high plane of consciousness, carrying on a pleasant conversation with some friends. We had, for the occasion, created the image of a drawing-room in which we were all comfortably seated. Without being aware of it I used, whilst speaking, an unfortunate phrase. I had barely finished speaking when I felt a shock, followed by a giddy descent which brought me back into my physical body. . . .

The images and ideas sent forth by thought must always express some quality, never a fault. . . .

During another experiment. . . . I wished to find out the effect of prayer in the Invisible. . . . When I thought of the words “Deliver us from evil” I felt such a loss of strength, was so overcome, that I was forced immediately to return to earth. . . .

Whatever the kind of attraction which is affecting us we must never act towards it in a negative manner. It is necessary that one be its absolute master. . . . We must remove its negative character; then this impulse will become our servant. And, in order to achieve this goal, the consciousness must be centered fully on the best in the universe, on principles of order, whose harmony is perceived by us under the various aspects of the Good, the Beautiful, and the True. (Yram 92-94)PAPOBEr • Yram

While this was experienced during an OBE, the emotional response is similar. That momentary focus on negativity is enough to pull you into a lower vibration.

Unfocused — Hazes, Fogs, Clouds

Cloudy hazes are caused by not being entirely tuned into a given plane’s frequency. Many of these cloudy hazes are seen during or just after travel, meaning our frequency is changing or has changed but we have not yet locked into a particular environment.

The Void Between Focuses

The void is like the empty space between radio stations on the radio dial. . . . Being in the void takes up a great deal of my time during astral projections - sometimes much more than I’d like! . . . There is actually a subtle type of variety to the different times I have been in the void. Sometimes it is simply a dark empty space. Other times though there is a hazy or smoky quality to it. Still other times I seem to see hazy ghost images of things. In this latter case, I suspect that I am very close to a subplane and am seeing ghost images of that subplane. Once I even met a being in the void! . . .

I sometimes appear in the void as soon as I leave my body. . . . I will also appear in the void if I lose my lockmold NOTE: focus on a subplane. . . . If I lose my lockmold, I usually do not wake up, but instead appear in the void. APCOBEr, LDer • modern • DeGracia

Tuning In to the Imagery

DeGracia is very aware of his tuning in and out of physical imagery. He calls this tuning in his “lockmold”. While he has it, he can see physical scenery around him. When he loses emotional control or runs out of energy, he loses his lockmold and ends up in a formless void.

“I was flying through a sea of faces. . . . I passed the face of a very beautiful woman and her beauty caught my attention so much that I reversed my motion until I came upon her face again. I stared very hard trying to focus my lockmold and I began to materialize again! And there she was standing in front of me, in the flesh! We seemed to be in the middle of an old west town and she was in line at the theater. . . .

I walked into the street again and tried to survey my surroundings. The sign gave me a definite impression of the Old West. The cops looked thoroughly modern though. The woman in green looked like someone from the late nineteen hundreds. The city itself seemed to be a cross between the 1920’s and the 1950’s in terms of the appearances of the buildings. The buildings were at most 5 stories high, some of yellow or red (like a rose) brick, others of the usual brick red color. I noticed I was on a dirt road. Then that flimsy feeling came over me again and I felt my lockmold fade.

I was now in the void again.” APCOBEr, LDer • modern • DeGracia

The sea of faces is nearer the formless reality — these are people in the astral focused at a similar frequency. They may or may not be sharing their subjective environments. DeGracia focuses in on one and her immersive physical-looking astral environment comes into focus around him. This is key! The environment has others within it, but it’s a conglomeration of styles from different eras — the thoughts and environments of all these people being assembled into a continuous shared scene.

I thought to myself that I must be right on the border of some definite frequency or plane, not locked well enough to actually be there, but right next door to it so to speak. I kept flying on, and the silhouettes were very reminiscent of buildings, cars and city objects. As I flew on, at one point I got the impression that I had entered the water and was under the water, though I was still in the void. . . . To materialize I stopped my forward motion and simply began to spin round and round. Also I began to concentrate on my hands, trying to lift them up and look at them. Then I began to see the neatest thing. As my hands began to form and I could start to see them, the silhouettes around me began to take on color and form. It was slow at first so I concentrated harder, and I watched an environment form around me. I was now out of the void and somewhere. I was standing in a forest, surrounded by all kinds of plants.

There were no recognizable silhouettes, but there were distinct qualities or feelings. . . . At first the darkness was very “electric.” Eventually the void seemed like a heavy fog. I got the idea to try to look at my hands. Watched my body and a red tile floor materialize around me as the fogginess of the void faded away. APCOBEr, LDer • modern • DeGracia

The belief-system radiation gave me a picture of a steep rocky cliff with a heavy, humid jungle below. I wondered why it was so clear and real to me. This was unusually rare; the belief system NOTE: astral world activity is generally dim and hazy to me at best. (Monroe 134-135)UJOBEr • modern • Monroe

It’s interesting that someone as adept at OBEs as Monroe would only rarely be tuned into astral thought form environments. He usually describes the astral from an energetic perspective rather than a physical one.

Thought-Form Scenes from Other Frequencies

The heavens are in the higher parts of the spiritual world, the world of spirits in the lower parts. . . . Hence the description of seeing through a glass darkly, or a veil. (Cannon 102)BDLhypnosis • modern • Cannon

Nonhuman Experience of Physical Thought Forms

Monroe and BB are exploring the mid-astral. BB has never been incarnated on Earth.

BB darted outward and down and I joined his descent. . . . We began to enter the familiar cleared areas in the haze. Houses, parks, fields of growing plants, woods, forests, large buildings. . . . Humanoid forms were busily occupying themselves in numerous earth-type activities.

BB flickered. (Haze is sure thick. What are they doing?) . . .

(Some are fixing up their houses. Some are working. . . . There is a poker game going on in that building over there. . . .)

BB cut in. (What building over where? I don’t get a percept on anything!)

I flickered. (No building?)

(Nope)

(No houses, streets, trees, fields. . . .)

(Just human-type forms moving around. And a lot of haze.) (Monroe 148-149)FJOBEr • modern • Monroe

Those who have not incarnated have no physical reference point to allow them to tune into physical thought forms in order to view them.

The View from Inside and Outside a Thought-Form Room

He and I are the only two in this study. . . . It is just an image surrounding us to set a certain atmosphere. And so, were one to see it from the outside they would merely see . . . a blob of mist. But they would know from the psychic feeling emanating from it that it was . . . being used for a specific purpose. And they would also be able to realize that we were within this construct. (Cannon 185)BDLhypnosis • modern • Cannon

Cloudy Fogs While Changing State (Traveling)

I saw my physical body lying lifeless upon its bed, but here was I, the real I, alive and well. . . . I could still see the room quite clearly around me, but there was a certain mistiness about is as though it were filled with smoke very evenly distributed. . . .

As we departed, the room gradually became more misty until it faded farther from my vision; and finally disappeared. (Borgia 10-11, 13)LWUchanneled • modern • Benson

We began to move upward. I could hear a hum as my body began to vibrate at a higher rate of speed. We moved up from one level to the next, like an airplane climbing gently into the sky. We were surrounded by a shimmering mist, cool and thick like fog off the ocean.

Around us I could see energy fields that looked like prisms of light. Some of this energy flowed like great rivers, while some eddied like tiny streams. I even saw lakes and small pools of it. . . .

Through the mist I could see mountains the color of deep-blue velvet. There were no sharp peaks and craggy slopes with jagged edges in this mountain range. . . .

On the mountainside were lights. Through the mist they looked like houses turning on their lights at twilight. (Brinkley 30)SBtLNDEr • modern • Brinkley

I could see a gray mist, and I was rushing toward it. . . . As I got closer to it I could see through it. Beyond the mist, I could see people, and their forms were just like they are on earth, and I could also see something which one could take to be buildings. The whole thing was permeated with the most gorgeous light—a living, golden yellow glow, a pale color. (Moody 72)LALresearcher • modern • Moody

This is a great example — she experiences her change of focus as movement, and as she reaches her destination state, the scene comes into focus for her.

I feel the . . . power of thought all around me. . . . I feel . . . thoughts of love . . . companionship . . . empathy . . . and it’s all combined with . . . anticipation . . . as if others are . . . waiting for me. . . .

Dr. N: Do you sense you are still connected to Earth through another dimension, perhaps?

S: In my mind Earth seems close . . . and I still feel connected to Earth . . . but I know I’m in another space. . . . It’s still a little . . . murky . . . but I’m moving out of this. (Newton 18-19)

Case 5:

S: I’m still passing through these . . . foamy clouds around me. . . . This place is big! It’s so bright and clean—it even smells good. I am looking at a beautiful ice palace. . . . It’s enormous . . . it looks like bright, sparkling crystal . . . colored stones shining all around me. . . . Passing Up Through the Lower Planes

While we are always safe and cannot be harmed, this doesn’t mean we can’t have scary or negative experiences. When passing through the lower astral, it’s best to refrain from seeing or interacting with anything at those frequencies.

Without Shielding

In non-physical trips to Locale II NOTE: the astral realm, often there is a “layer” or area which one must pass through. . . . It seems to be the part of Locale II closest to the Here-Now NOTE: the physical, and in some way most related. It is a gray-black hungry ocean where the slightest motion attracts nibbling and tormenting beings.

It is as if you are the bait dangling in this vast sea. If you move slowly and do not react to the curious “fish” who come to investigate, you pass through without much incident. Move violently and fight back, then more excited denizens come rushing in to bite, pull, push, shove. (Monroe 120-121)JOotBOBEr • modern • Monroe

Edgar Cayce: “I see myself as a tiny point detached from my earthly body, and I perceive this body as lying motionless before me. Somehow I become aware that I am trapped in an oppressive darkness, and I have a feeling of being terribly alone. But suddenly I become aware of a beam of white light. As the small point that I now am, I struggle upward toward the source of the light and know that I must reach it or be lost.

“While I am ascending the path of light, I become ever more conscious that I am passing through different levels on which there is a great deal of commotion. On the lowest level I see vague but frightful shapes, grotesque forms like those seen in nightmares. Then, on all sides, monsters begin to appear, parts of whose bodies was incongruously large.”

Cayce goes on to describe more changes of scene and mood until he finally reaches his goal. Once there, he can relate to others. They are the ones with whom he feels a spiritual affinity. (Delacour 170)GotBresearcher • modern • Delacour

Helen Aintree: “I see my body below me getting smaller and smaller, as if I were being lifted up a shaft filled with bright light. Experience has taught me that the best thing is to keep my gaze fixed upward, since otherwise I see frightful things unfolding on every side. The higher I rise, the more the figures and images lose their brutality, until finally all is peaceful.” (Delacour 169-170)GotBresearcher • modern • Delacour

Shielding While Moving Through

I was intensely aware of feeling more free than I had ever felt in the physical body. My mind also was very clear. . . .

I suddenly had a strong sense of presence with me. Immediately, two forms of “light” appeared. I began to feel waves of energy being directed toward me. I knew intuitively that this was some kind of support system. . . .

I feel relaxed and far away. I am very comfortable. There is a coolness coming in around me. Two beings are taking my hands. They are helping me, giving me security, and talking to me. They are going to take me to a certain level; and on the way I will go through a dark area. They have put a kind of blindfold on me and are communicating without words that when I get up to this other level, it is going to be a lot lighter. . . . Now I am experiencing a floating feeling, as if I’m gently bouncing on a cloud. . . .

They communicate that they are on the same consciousness level that I am on. I have been with them on an unconscious level in the sleep state. (McKnight 35-37)CJOBEr • modern • McKnight

Edwin later informed me that I had passed through the lower spheres—and unpleasant ones—but that through the authority of his mission of coming to help me into my realm, we were both fully protected from any and every description of unpleasant influence. We were, in effect, completely invisible to all but those of our own realm and higher. (Borgia 59)LWUchanneled • modern • Benson

Thought Form Transitions — Rising and Descending Ground

If you are in a thought form environment, then the changing of frequency can be be given physical form as rising or descending ground, according to the direction of your “movement”. This acts as a visual metaphor. Ascending hills and mountains often leads to higher frequency planes, while descending into valleys or going underground leads to lower frequency planes, closer to the physical.

Each sphere is completely invisible to the inhabitants of the spheres below it, and in this respect, at least, it provides its own boundary. . . .

How, then, does one proceed from one to the next, either above or below. There must be some point or points in each realm where there is a distinct upward inclination to the one and a distinct declivity to the other. Simple though it sounds, that is precisely the case.

It is not difficult to imagine, perhaps, a gradual descent to regions that are less salubrious. We can call to our aid our earthly experiences, and recollect some rocky places that we could visit and descend, treacherous to the feet, leading us down into dark caverns, cold and damp and uninviting, where we could imagine all manner of noisome things lurking in readiness for us. We can then remember that above us, though out of sight, there shines the sun, spreading warmth and light upon the earth, while yet we seem to be in another world altogether. . . .

The transition in the spirit world from one realm to another is literal—as literal as passing from the dark cavern to the sunlight above. . . .

To pass from this realm where I live to the next higher, I shall find myself walking along gently rising ground. . . . There comes a certain line in the bridge between the realms where the higher realm becomes invisible to less spiritual eyes. Just as certain light rays are invisible to earthly eyes, and certain sounds and musical notes are inaudible to earthly ears, so are the higher realms invisible to the inhabitants of the lower realms.

And the reason is that each realm possesses a higher vibrational rate than that below it. (Borgia 131-133)LWUchanneled • modern • Benson

Ascending into the Higher Astral — Rising Ground

Again we found ourselves upon grassland, but with a striking difference. The turf upon which we were walking was infinitely softer than that of the interior of the realm. The green of the verdure was even brighter than we had thought possible. The flowers were growing in still greater profusion, and the intensity of color, of perfume, and of health-giving power transcended anything we had encountered. The very air seemed to be imbued with rainbow tints. There were few dwellings at the spot where we were immediately standing, but behind us were to be seen some of the most stately and beautiful houses I have ever seen. . . .

So were we now warmed and filled with such an elation that we were almost silent in wonderment. . . . We moved along, bathed in radiance. . . .

We walked a little way forward, but we could proceed no farther. There were no visible barriers, but we felt that we could not breathe if we went onward. (Borgia 60-61)

We walked toward the boundary between the higher realm and our own. . . . Already we could feel the atmosphere more rarified. . . . I noticed that this atmosphere had a great deal more color in it, much more than in the depths of the realm. . . . It was almost as though there were a greater degree of buoyancy in the air, apart altogether from a noticeable effect of elevation of the mind. (Borgia 157)LWUchanneled • modern • Benson

Subject: It is just gradual transitions from one level to the other. . . . You just notice that things are gradually changing and becoming different as you go further up NOTE: in frequency. (Cannon 103)BDLhypnosis • modern • Cannon

Descending into the Lower Astral — Falling Ground

These reveal more qualities of the lower astral. It’s colder, colors are faded, light is diminished.

We found ourselves upon a very wide expanse of grassland, but we both noticed that the turf felt less soft beneath our feet; it was, in fact, becoming hard as we walked along. The beautiful emerald green was fast vanishing, and the grass was taking on a dull yellow appearance, very similar to earthly grass that has been scorched by the sun and has lacked water. We saw no flowers, no trees, no dwellings, and everywhere seemed bleak and barren. There was no sign of human life, and life seemed to be rapidly disappearing from beneath our feet, as by now the grass had ceased altogether, and we were upon hard ground. We noticed, too, that the temperature had fallen considerably. Gone was all that beautiful, genial warmth. There was a coldness and dampness in the air which seemed to cling to our beings, and cast a chill over our very souls. . . . Ruth then visibly shivered, and stopped abruptly, imploring us not to go any farther. . . .

We had been only on the threshold of the lower spheres. (Borgia 59-60)LWUchanneled • modern • Benson

Again we are on the borders of the lower realms. Edwin warned us that we should feel that sense of chilling which we experienced before, but that by an effort of will we could throw it off. . . . I glanced at Ruth and I noticed that her robe as had Edwin’s had taken on a dull color, approaching almost grey. Looking at myself I discovered that my own dress had undergone a similar change. . . . Our friend explained that this toning down of our natural colors was but the operation of a natural law, and did not mean that we had lost what we had already gained. The practical application of such a law meant that we should not be conspicuous in uncongenial surroundings, nor should we carry the light of our realm into those dark places to blind the vision of those who dwelt there. (Borgia 79)LWUchanneled • modern • Benson

The thicker, denser material of lower frequencies inhibits light and color.

[The lower realms] are not for curiosity seekers. . . . Those who wander in that direction alone, without authority, are soon turned back by kindly souls whose work it is to save others from the perils that lie beyond. (Borgia 62)LWUchanneled • modern • Benson

Mr. Gaythorpe describes his “dreams.” They began “in high and beautiful sunlit mountains where the ‘dreamer’ is among friendly companions and vividly aware of surroundings.” He continued, “There follows a swift descent into a deep and gloomy valley, through which flows a slow dark ‘river’; then the loss of companions.” (Crookall 38)CBAPresearcher • modern • Crookall

More Rapid Changes of Environment

The expectation of object permanence leads to gradual changes if we remain focused on a scene while changing our frequency. The lighting will gradually change, and the environment along with it. We can overcome this expectation by interrupting the continuity. Techniques include closing your eyes, spinning, or passing through a door (see “Scene Transformations and Transitions” in into-dreams.php).

When we paid our visit to the boundary, we made our way there directly and rapidly, and we had no consciousness of the intermediate states through which we passed. It was for this reason that our sudden change of environment was so noticeable. Had we made our progress slowly we should have perceived the gradual decline of all those pleasant and enjoyable features that constitute the heaven of this realm. And those who dwelt within this area of decline are in the same relative position to ourselves in respect of movement: they would be inhibited from passing higher just as we were on the borders of that higher realm.

The same conditions obtained in our journey to the borders of the higher realm. We traversed the distance so quickly that we were unable to observe the gradual alteration in our surroundings. Otherwise we should have seen the country taking on a higher degree of etherealization, a greater intensification of color and brightness. (Borgia 62)LWUchanneled • modern • Benson

Going Underground

Many times when you go underground, whether it be downstairs, down a ladder, or down into a hole, you end up in a lower frequency area; a worse place — darker, more constricted, creepier, more cluttered. Depending on where you’re starting, it won’t always be awful, but it will usually be worse.

Tight, Cramped Areas

Higher frequencies of consciousness feel expansive, while lower ones feel constrictive. There is an interesting spatial correlate to this. Imagine that while standing in a room, you expand to nearly the size of the room. You feel constricted, your motion constrained. Now imagine you’ve shrunk to the size of a marble. Suddenly the same room feels vast, with room to move and fly about. I’ve changed my scale in this way in the dream state.

These feelings might be due to the degree of expansion into 3D physical space. Remember that the Source flows outward through the nonphysical and then into physical space at the tiniest scales. At slower frequencies of consciousness, we catch that expansion later on — we’re more expanded into 3D space than usual, and at higher frequencies, we catch it sooner, when it’s smaller, making us less expanded.

Limitations on Travel

In the big picture, there are no limits to where we can go — in other words, no limits to where we can focus our consciousness. However, there are some specific limitations. For example, we cannot increase our frequency beyond what we are willing to open up to. This comes from learning and development, from expansion of self.

Almost Unlimited

Any time we are astral . . . we can visit the astral aspects of any place in the universe, although we tend to stay fairly close to home. (Hoodwin 328)JoYSchanneled • modern • Hoodwin

There are NO limits to distance, destination or speed. You can travel to the most distant galaxy. . . . It is like folding space and moving without moving. ToPOBEr • modern • Bruce

I saw galaxies and traveled to them with ease and almost instantaneous speed. (Eadie 88)EbtLNDEr • modern • Eadie

Limitations on Travel

All places are not open to us here. There are many realms where we are not able to enter except in very special circumstances, or only if our state of progression permits. (Borgia 41)LWUchanneled • modern • Benson

Frequency-Based Limitations

Our Natural Frequency

Each soul as it passed into spirit passed into that realm for which it had fitted itself when upon the earth. . . . There were others infinitely better—and others infinitely worse. . . . There are other realms immeasurably more beautiful than that in which we were now happily living; realms of surpassing beauty into which we cannot penetrate until such time as we have earned the right to enter, either as visitors or as inhabitants. But though we may not pass into them, the glorious souls who dwell in them can come into realms of less celestial rarity, and can visit us here. . . . They constantly make visitations to consult and converse with the dwellers here, to give advice and help. (Borgia 55)

We can always proceed to a realm lower than our own, while we cannot always mount higher. (Borgia 58)LWUchanneled • modern • Benson

Ascending Too High

Higher frequencies of consciousness present a natural limitation based on their sheer energy levels (experienced as intense light and heat). We need to be open enough to let it pass through us, or we will find it too intense to bear.

At the border to the higher realms there is no need for such sentinels to keep others from crossing, because the natural law prevents it. . . . [The higher spiritual atmosphere] would not damage the soul, of course, but a soul thus unprepared would find itself in much the same situation as upon earth when one emerges into brilliant sunlight after a prolonged stay in complete darkness. But as in the case of the earthly sunshine one can, after a suitable lapse of time, become again perfectly at ease in the normal bright light, it is not so in the case of the higher realms. There is no such adaptability there. The “blinding” effect will be continuous to one of a lower state. (Borgia 62-63)LWUchanneled • modern • Benson

At last, if we go on with this strange ascent, a magnetic hyper-activity saturates the atmosphere. Soon we feel giddy. If we persist, it seems as if our basis of energy tends to disintegrate, owing to an inexplicable disturbance of the equilibrium. It would seem as if all the particles of our being were being violently torn apart, and this painful explosion forces the experimenter to descend into regions which are more favorable to his personal vibrations. [The Inspecs NOTE: reincarnating selves] seemed to be independent of the recycling rings. . . .

I had been developing a sense of familiarity with the radiation of the INSPECS and thought I could home in on the signal—the ident—just as I could others. . . .

Time: 2:17 A.M. . . . Homing in the ident . . . went through normal reach and stretch procedure . . . moved rapidly through ring system . . . and beyond . . . began to feel warm, more so as I went until it became almost too uncomfortable and was at the point of turning back . . . when I rammed headlong into . . . a barrier, smooth in texture, rigid, impenetrable. . . . A bright light, very intense, glowed in front of me, first ovate, reshaping into a tall humanoid form, so bright I cringed from it . . . then I began to cool down until I was no longer uncomfortable, and I could tolerate the brightness. . . .

(You encountered a condition similar to that which your scientists call a standing wave, where two like energies in phase appear to cancel one another to zero. Yet there is no zero, as energy does not cancel, it transforms into other dynamic states. . . . You are just outside the portal, the gate to our reality, a conversion point.) John: Low level energy souls find it very hard to step into this NOTE: higher realm. They feel frightened or afraid of this area and thus he says they do not seek to come here. (Cannon 77)BDLhypnosis • modern • Cannon

My next question was, “How do you explain this intense happiness?”

“Your thoughts are vibrations which are controlled by the Master-Vibration. It neutralizes all negative thoughts and lets you think only the good thoughts, such as love, freedom and happiness.”

“Then what becomes of the old grouches?”

“. . . They go to a plane of lower vibrations where their kind of thoughts can live. If they came here, the Master-Vibration would annihilate them. After death people gravitate into homogenous groups according to the rate of their soul’s vibrations. If the percent of discord in a person is small, it can be eliminated by the Master-Vibration; then the remaining good can live on here.” ISHNDEr • modern • Yensen

Assistance Going to Higher Planes

This happens frequently during guided tours of realms that are higher in frequency than you’re used to. The guide increases the guest’s energy and then applies a kind of shielding to protect them from the more intense energy there.

When those of a lower realm travel to a higher, it is always by authority, either vested in the traveller, or in some other person of a higher sphere, who will act as escort. . . . It then becomes imperative, in many cases, that an inhabitant of those realms should, as it were, throw a cloak over his charge. (Borgia 62-63)

There are two ways, and two ways only, of penetrating into those lofty states. The first is through our own spiritual development and progression; the second is by special invitation from some dweller in those regions. (Borgia 189)

The Chaldean told us that by placing his hands upon our heads it would also have the effect, in addition to giving us power to travel, of adjusting our vision to the extra intensity of light that we should encounter in the high realm. Without such counterbalancing we should find ourselves in very considerable distress. In this adjustment our sight was not dimmed from within, but a kind of film was superimposed without, just in the same way as upon earth you wear protective glass to shield the eyes. . . .

The Egyptian next took our hands within his, and we perceived a fresh accession of power flowing into us.

The Chaldean asked us to make ourselves completely passive, and to remember that we were upon a journey for our enjoyment and not as a test of our spiritual endurance. “And now, my friends,” said he, “our arrival is awaited. So let us be off.” (Borgia 194-195)

Expanding Our Range

This is a world of mental reality, which by the very power that generates it, creates, what you might call, a physical condition or picturisation of things. The more one sort of develops mentally and spiritually here, the more conscious and aware you become of other places, vistas and people. It’s just a matter of tapping the source and becoming, as it were, tuned into it. GOCchanneled • modern • Flint

Can’t Enter Dwelling Places

Broadly speaking we can go anywhere when we are travelling, but when our thoughts have a definite object, we must allow for the freewill of others, and for the resistances due to the psychic atmosphere around the place we are visiting. . . .

I have met resistance in the guise of black clouds emanating from the house where the person I wished to visit was living. (Yram 147)PAPOBEr • Yram

Though it is possible to pass through all the houses in a town, as if they were not there, we must not imagine that we can go into any man’s place against his will. . . .

Your dwelling is unbreachable. . . .

I . . . managed to go into the room of the young man, but was quickly driven away by the unfriendly atmosphere. I hardly had the time to see him lying in bed . . . when I was pushed back by an unknown force. I had the idea that this energy was projected by someone called Jacques. I expressed a mental wish to see him. At once, this unknown person appeared in the form of a soldier with a fixed bayonet, menacing and insulting me. (Yram 144-146)PAPOBEr • Yram

The Tunnel

The Tunnel we experience at death is an experience that is largely unique to the NDE, a phenomenon related to exiting the physical. This is covered in detail in “The Tunnel” in ndes.php.
