The Red Scooter★★★
June 14, 2000

Rebecca and I are riding about on a collapsible red scooter. We need something fixed, so we go to the old Definition 6 building, but it’s in a different area. We let ourselves in. [We visit with the people there — some old, some new, and pick up old mail] Then we left. We can hear this Sarah Mclaughlin and Smashing Pumpkins concert and we drive around looking for it. The traffic is so fast that we miss our turn. We turn around and end up listening from this apartment complex. There are really weird speed effects and accelerations going on.

Then someone comes up to us and I have this sudden fear that he’ll ride off with Rebecca on the red scooter — so of course he does. I chase them, but I’m very slow. I concentrate really hard on running fast and the colors get deeper and darker. I become aware I’m dreaming, aware that I can break the seeming rules of reality around me, but still the red scooter pulls out of sight. I decide to try to instantly be there and the scenery all disappears to this red-rose smear with random objects here and there as I travel some inner space corridor and arrive right where they are.

Bat Boy

I chase them down into a sunken staircase (the underworld) and into this madhouse scene with scary sleepwalker people all milling about. I rush through two pale greenish rooms to where Rebecca is. I pass multiple copies of the bad guy; this yellow-eyed purple-haired guy that looks like “bat boy” — very much like a thought form as it is mostly lifeless. I reach the exit but a wave of fear passes over me. The door leads me back inside, but I focus and press onward and make it out.

References: I used to work at Definition 6. Smashing Pumpkins and Sarah McLaughlin are bands. Bat Boy was a weird character from a tabloid.

Speed Alterations: The old trouble with speed when trying to catch someone. My dawning lucidity reminded me that there’s a mode of travel that allows one to instantly be somewhere, which is what I choose to attempt. The color effects are very interesting. Why red? And why the deeper, darker colors? I’ve seen this before in “The Buzzing Campus Eclipse”.

The Underworld: Going downstairs is a typical sign of moving into the underworld, and the bat boy thought form and sleepwalkers bear this out.

Faster, Faster!: The classic inability to run fast, which I completely overcome moments later by lucidly teleporting to them.

Madhouse Creatures: The underground madhouse area is filled with unresponsive dreamers. The antagonist is my own thought form, and looking closely I can see the tell-tale sign of the lifeless, plastic face.

Bat Boy Army: Another example of the odd appearance of multiple copies of the same person. Could it be due to me projecting onto several sleepers the face of the bat boy character? I was looking for him at the time.

Variable-Speed Music: This is another case of music in dreams where the tempo and speed is variable and strange. I wonder if the dream self focus has difficulty maintaining a regular tempo, as attention phasing on and off it speeds it up and slows it down.
