Jarrin’s Hell★★★
July 5, 1997

Context: Jeff and Jarrin - a letter from a Spring Lake Park person coming, probably about reunions, and lots of family activities in Minneapolis. I also decided movies suck and don't want to see any more and they cost too much.

So I’m out visiting Jeff and Jarrin again. Jarrin’s my focus this time. I find his house. It’s sunny and his parents are outside. I go to them and say hi. Then I set up my computer nearby (which broke in an earlier dream) and set their boom box to play Ween. Before too long I realized how totally weird what I was doing was and packed up and decided to go see Jarrin now. I wandered through his house and it was really shady and cluttered. His parents said he was at another person’s house.

Then I went high-speed drift traveling over roads and finally to where he was. He was very depressed and had this really old computer program displaying why he hates this boy Tim (one of his BBS followers) so much. He had the feeling of being extraordinarily fat. We went for a walk. He said he had some disease that crept around, then killed you. He was gonna die, he said, before long. I told him I could help him, that he needed love and motivation and sunshine. He seemed to decline the offer.

Jess and I and some others were going to a movie but it was $13.01 and the movie was represented as a crappy Party Pizza so I refused. I went and told Jess. This felt like a staging area for dreams.

Not long after, Jeff and I were in a jello-pie “factory.” No, it was Jarrin, consisting of 10 fat ladies in an assembly line. He got a whole pie and I got a free sample since it was strawberry jello with bananas. Chad was hanging around too but I was ignoring him for the most part.

Here’s a note about the Ween CD: Once I put it in I didn’t focus much on it and it was going by really fast. When my attention went to it, it slowed down and got louder. The effect of my attention was just like being high, but to a larger degree.

References: Ween is a band. I went to high school in Spring Lake Park. BBS is an online bulletin board system.

Background Music: Being high on marijuana feels just like dreaming while in the body. I have experienced this kind of attention-modulated experience in that state, but in the dream, it was to a much higher degree. When getting less attention, music seems to pass by rapidly, but in the dream, it also gets softer. Without physical ears that must hear, nonphysical “sound” requires attention to perceive.

High-Speed Travel: By focusing your attention on someone, you can travel to their location. This travel often occurs at a fast speed, as you drift quickly towards them. You will often rationalize a car if you’re near the ground or a plane if you’re higher up.

Identity Scramble: Here I’m uncertain about whether this character is Jeff or Jarrin, two of my main friends from high school. How I mistake 10 fat ladies for Jarrin, I do not understand at all.

Representation: This movie, in terms of “pizza”, would be a Party Pizza. Party Pizza is a crappy, low-quality pizza I had from time to time with Jess as a teen, but Jess loved it. I guess that gets the sense of the movie across pretty well — Jess would love it but I wouldn’t. It seems weird at first but it’s a very clever way to get the idea across.

Also, 101.3 was a radio station we both listened to a lot as teens, which is when we got the Party Pizzas.
