Visiting Banana House★★★
June 22, 2024
Oberlin College

I was visiting “Banana House”, which didn’t much look like Banana House. I showed up and went inside. The first person I met wondered if I was a handyman, and I said that I used to live there. There were maybe 8 people living there — young college students. Real people, not projections. The place was a wreck, as it always had been. I asked a little about the landlord, David Sonner, and one person said they hadn’t heard from him in 10 years, and that they had the same contract going on repeat. I told them some things I knew about the building. Basically I was wandering around, talking to people here and there. I started cleaning up garbage, just to be useful.

Eventually Rebecca showed up and I met her outside. The neighborhood around it only had a few scattered houses left. The rest had burned down a while ago and nature had regrown. We switched to an overhead view of the neighborhood at this time. A guy who lived in Banana House said he had accidentally done it. We went inside and I showed Rebecca around. The people were okay with our presence but were also wondering why we were there.

It was getting dark and I left with this guy. I used my normal mode of travel, which was doing a little hop onto my heel, leaning way back, and just gliding forward on my heel. The guy was on roller skates, and was intrigued by my mode of travel. I hadn’t thought anything of it since that’s how I always traveled. I could go 40 MPH like that, speeding up and slowing down at will. Weird!

References: David Sonner was the landlord of Banana House.

Heel Gliding: I recall doing this a bunch, just naturally, as a way to travel. I think I may have come up with it myself.

Visiting a Place: I’m visiting what I take to be Banana House at Oberlin College. Rebecca and I last lived there 27 years ago.
