A Fish Through Glass★★
January 7, 1996
Mass Transit Malls

I’m in the mall with Jess, Amy B, and a friend of mine. We were there with our parents, against our will. As I somehow suspected, our parents were running off to Planned Parenthood for some reason. Well, we ditched them and went exploring. Jess, Amy, and I wanted to talk, so we looked for a place to talk. I found this mystic weirdness shop with couches and mattresses all over the floor. It had fish tanks lining the walls, and we all sat down and started to talk. I was watching the fish and one slipped through the glass and started swimming through the room. I wondered if we were breathing water or thick air or what. But then I discovered it was a trick played by what used to be the shop owner, but who was now Krist Novoselic, the drummer of Nirvana. So we got to know him, told stories, and found out it was his room (but still in the mall). My other friends appeared as I told stories about them.

Calling Friends: After looking for a place to talk, it seemed we ended transported to someone’s bedroom. Because I was in a mall moments before, I naturally thought of the bedroom as a shop and him as the shop owner.

Talking about someone forms a connection to them which they can feel, and they can travel over that connection to you.

Dreaming Mind: When I saw the fish swimming through the air, I didn’t for a moment think I was dreaming. A more realistic explanation, it seemed at the time, was that we were breathing water or that the air was really thick here. Then it was explained away as a trick.
