Revisiting High School
August 1, 2004

I’ve been thinking about Jarrin lately, about how he’s doing, what he’s up to. But I figure he probably hates me. (This is 12 years after I graduated.)

I dream I’m in a grocery store and walking out with some groceries when I see him pass by with his mother. I reach out and say “Jarrin?” and he sees me but keeps walking. His mother stops and she talks with me a little. I walk along with her, talking, but Jarrin stays ahead. I ask what they’re doing in Georgia. Jarrin’s mom says he’s doing something in a city I don’t recognize. I eventually run ahead and talk with him, even though he’s not interested. I say that I honestly have no idea why he hates me so much. I ask him why. He thaws just a tiny bit but is still cold.

Then later I’m with Jarrin and about 20 friends of his hanging out at this college campus. I go right up to him, having just seen him. We make light conversation. Jeff comes by with some friends, but I’m more interested in talking to Jarrin at this point. I end up hanging out with Jeremy and Tony Tam and a bunch of others laying in a pile watching TV, barely conscious. Jeremy’s a dealer of some kind.

At some point I and some others visit our high school. It’s modern but badly made, swollen at the seams. I commented about the giant plastic baby doll’s head that used to be atop it (I have no idea where that came from).

Then there’s a long segment where I’m hanging out with Joleen and it seems like it lasts days but it’s full of unhappiness and fighting. Just before I wake up, I pack up my things and tell her it’s over. She says she’ll always have feelings for me. I think a moment, then walk out.

References: Jarrin, Jeff, Jeremy, and Tony Tam are friends from high school.

Checking In On High School: My thoughts of Jarrin made a connection to him in the dream state. His disinterest in talking with me at this point is likely an accurate reflection of his feelings. But that connection spirals out into other people in our high school friend group, and eventually to Joleen, who I knew through connections to Jarrin. The emotions there was probably also an accurate reflection of the feelings at the time.
