The Whales of Maui★★★
March 31, 1994

Context: I was in Maui at the time.

Humpback whales

I was dreaming intensely happy dreams concerning humpback whales. I had completely forgotten that I was in Maui and thought the sound of the waves were sudden strong gusts of wind. This frightened me, so I awoke.

I fell back into the whale dream for a while. Then the following dreams came to me.

The Key Challenges: We were running around, searching for the challenges. The object was to find the challenge, pass it, then receive the key. With the key you could lock shut any challenge you wished. I passed the dragon challenge, then another, then got caught up in the mobster/Johnny Dangerously one. I replayed it a few times, bringing some girl along after a while. For a moment it felt like the movie True Romance.

The Angie Dream: Me, Dave, and Angie are in the back seat of Chris H’s car, in that order. He’s driving us somewhere. We pick up Jay and he starts moving in on Angie big time. She’s supposedly with Dave. Dave gets mildly upset, and Jay keeps pushing, till she’s sitting on his lap, facing him. Dave and I talk through notes. Finally Angie gets fed up and comes over to Dave and me, throwing nasty looks at Jay.

References: Johnny Dangerously and True Romance are movies.

Dangerous Winds: My context had shortened enough in the dream state that I didn’t remember the new place that my physical body was sleeping. The sound of the waves I had been hearing all day was unfamiliar in the dream state. It was too new to be available at that level yet, not yet engrained deep enough as a possibility.

Because I lacked that context, the next most likely possibility was that it was strong wind gusts, indicating a storm. I decided to wake up to make a decision about how bad the storm was, but waking up expanded my context enough that I could remember that it was just the sound of the waves.

A Game of Challenges: Here we’re playing a game where dreamers find challenge rotes, enter them, and attempt to pass the challenges. Depending on your personality and growth, some will be easier than others.

It’s possible the other dream of the night, “The Angie Dream” was one of these challenges as well.

Entering a Rote Together: Bringing the girl along into the mobster/Johnny Dangerously rote changed the feel of it to one that was still violent, but more focused on relationships: True Romance.

Passing Telepathic Notes: Here I am communicating telepathically with Dave, but I rationalize our private conversation as passing notes.
