Dream Journal

Jeff slept over last night. This was a two-part dream. First, I was called in to the Robotech Academy. There was a big crowd on a deck, or below, looking at the rows of Robotech hovercrafts, hovertanks, and helicopters. Then it got quiet and they called my name, and assigned me to the #1 leader hovertank. It was huge, the largest one there, except for another one just like it. It was blue and green and looked strange, but awesome. I opened a book and began thinking, putting things together, and creating another name for my hovertank. Later on, they called Jeff and assigned him to an AJAX transformable helicopter. My group talked about how funny it would be since he didn’t know how to fly.
Here’s the second part: I was running in the woods along a path with dad, mom, and Jessie. Other people passed from time to time. I saw Boy George, and scratched him. Then Jessie and Mom had to go. I kept running with dad. We passed Boy George again and I scratched him really hard. He had purple blood. Then I ran really fast.
Next, my dad and I were at the top of a snow-covered mountain. We had a sled so we got on and started going down, steadily increasing speed. A ship came and flew next to us. It was about 30 feet long and red and white. I looked inside, and was glad to see that Boy George wasn’t after me. Then the ship left. I saw a cliff, and a valley ahead. We couldn’t slow down. The valley had a river and two strange, transparent messy horns sticking up that were covered with green netting. We flew off the edge and caught the net. Inside we saw the two main actors from “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” being stupid. Then we saw a wooden ship floating by, so I jumped on. There might have been someone else with me, but I’m not sure. It had a flat deck and was purple, orange, and pink. There were three trap doors in it. In the front were three pipes, the captain, and a strange furnace. I had the hammer from Zelda II, and went around hitting parts of the ship with it, hoping to reveal treasure like in the game. I went to the front and put two glowing lumps that were each about three feet long into the furnace. Then the ship started sinking. We all jumped out, and soon fell down a waterfall. There were two more waterfalls, and after the first, I caught a quick-moving side stream. No one got hurt. We came to the shore by a cave-like opening with a huge metal door inside. We considered opening it, but wondered about the possibility of water coming out. I opened it, and found the world of Zork.
References: Robotech is an animated sci-fi series I loved. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a comedy movie. Zelda II and Zork are video games. Boy George was a singer.
Video Game Behavior in Dreams: Here I go from one video game context to another. When I am really into a video game, I sometimes take the game behavior into the dream. Here I search the ship for treasure using a magic hammer.
An interesting thing about Zork: as a text-based game, all the imagery for it is created in my head. I don’t recognize the appearance of the huge metal door at the time in the dream, but it matches the description from the game, and the image I imagined for it.
Ridealongs: There’s a “we” which begins as me and my dad, but before long that character fades into a more vague “someone else”.
More importantly, note how my pronouns change. Whenever non-actions happen, such as perception or thinking, I use “we”. When action happens, it’s usually “I” who is doing it. Note the sentence “We saw a wooden ship floating by, so I jumped on.” It’s almost as if the other is riding along with me, while I am in charge of the actions. They are in the theater of my mind, sometimes appearing physically in the scene, sometimes not, but always there with me.
I’m 14 when I had this dream, so the phenomena of the “dream friend” seems to have always been there.
