I’m in the wilderness with a guide. A pack of large elephants stampedes over us, then slows down. We follow them into a narrow gorge with a river. The gorge continues to narrow, and then the scene changes dramatically. Now the walls of the gorge are on all sides, but it’s the inside of a whale, and all the elephants are people. My guide friend tells me: “This is how the elephants travel this part of the river.” I get nervous. It’s really gross inside, like the inside of a throat. . . . Movement slows, and people are shifting. The guide explains that the whale stopped because he hit his head on some rock at the bottom. Suddenly a chant rises up: “Go Jimmy! Go Jimmy! Go Jimmy!” This kid with a boom box stands up. Rocking music sounds, and the whale starts moving really fast. I sense happiness from it. Then I hang on really tight as we jump out of the water. Suddenly we’re on a city street. Everyone else falls out. Only I hang on and go for a great ride as the whale jumps and flips through the street. Finally it’s over. I’m really happy. I ask the name of the guide — it’s “Jay”. The whale I seem to know as a personal friend. Strange, huh?
Transformations: Elephants change into people, and a wet, narrow gorge turns into the inside of a whale. To the guide this is just how it works here. We exit the water and the whale onto a city street.
