The Dark Tower Tour★★★

The Dark Tower
The upper and lower road to the Dark Tower

The Dark Tower is a college in which the Dark Tower itself is the first, main building you see upon arrival. In front of it, the road from the west splits into upper and lower parkway roads heading east, with a mixture of trees and open spaces. There are huge square grates all over the lower road which caused big bumps when you drove over them, so I avoided them. The road was a changing patchwork of stone tiles near the end. Whoever I was with in the dream, I was swearing to them that this was the actual location of the Dark Tower. I had a name for the place, too: something like “Anabestos”. I said it had something to do with my first rally, when I fell in love at a rally? But no one was pictured with that thought. Strange. . . . There are a lot of buildings along each parkway, which I visit from time to time. I have many adventures in the Dark Tower and the next, squarish building over. It’s big but not as tall. Things aren’t as dark seeming. The buildings are of a tan-brown color, and made of brick. They are dusted with black dirt.

Inside one of these two buildings, I had found my way to an unoccupied room with bunk beds and white comforters. There was an opening in the ceiling along the outside wall. I pulled myself up into a room that was almost exactly the same, but smaller. Then I went up again to an even smaller similar room. I had left my companions behind in the lower rooms, and there were only children in this room. They encouraged me to escape something by entering a tiny picture on the wall but I was having trouble using the gateway. At times it would begin to enlarge around me but then I’d pull back. Details forgotten.

I awoke lying on my back and found that I could remember best while remaining in that position.

References: Rallies are youth group gatherings at Unity Church.

The Dark Tower: The upper and lower roads reminded me somewhat of Kenyon College in Ohio.

Hyperspace Tower Rooms: While in altered states, I’ve seen that towers in dreams can be the same room repeated vertically over and over, each slightly smaller than the one below. In fact, I saw the genesis of the Dark Tower this way! And here I am in a building near the Dark Tower, climbing up through this very kind of repeating tower room! There’s something to this!

The Picture Gateway: The children’s suggestion of escape through a picture reveals their knowledge of dream gateways. Were they dreamers as well? How interesting to see me engage then pull back when trying to use the gateway.

C.S. Lewis uses this kind of dream gateway in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

The painting gateway — the zooming in is all that is required (the movie gets it wrong after this scene).
