Dream Journal
November 27, 1999
Twice earlier in the night I nearly awoke to the Nova Dreamer lights. The first time they appeared pink with light gray lines, like the light had cling-wrap on it. The second time they appeared as a red-orange kaleidoscope of shapes.
I dreamed I was in my college dorm (somewhat related to Oberlin) and was looking for my room. I found Ed and introduced him to a girl from Solstice BBS. She looked like Jubilee from Generation X. He thought she was cute. In Ed’s room I was told it was something like December 6, 2001 (two years later). I found that the last thing I could remember was the last few days of November, 1999, (the actual date). I felt I must be losing my mind, having a psychotic break. Then things went dark and I saw red flashing lights in my head. I thought “There are those lights! I must have been abducted by aliens for the last two years!” I was really scared.
References: Solstice was the name of a BBS (bulletin board system) I once had. The Nova Dreamer is a lucid dreaming tool that flashes red lights during REM sleep. Generation X is a superhero comic book.
Super Nova Dreamer: Written at the time: The lights first come through the context of the dream. Then, if I refocus, the dream dims out nearly to black and I just see the kaleidoscope pattern of red lights.
Taking Waking Form: Dream elements SNAP to recent waking memories to best get through to you. Solstice BBS didn’t include people’s pictures, so I didn’t know what she looked like. Having to improvise, the girl’s hairstyle and clothing came from a character in Generation X which I was reading last night.
Looking for a Cause: Instead of doubting the date I was told, I believed it and became afraid for my sanity. When the lights appeared from my lucid dreaming device, they acted as the answer to the question “how did I lose 2 years?”
Nova Lights: Note that there is only one flashing red light in front of each eye. Perhaps the multiplication of the lights in due to my perceiving a wider cross-section of visual neurons — the single red light appearing 9 times.
