Dream Journal
July 26, 1997
I’ll start here since I want this part clear as clear can be. I was in this bookstore cafe eating with some friends, but I didn’t recognize them. The walls were filled with books and I picked up and read one called “Solstice”, thinking that 1) someone took my name, and 2) that it was The Lord of the Rings (LotR). In fact it had nothing in common at all with LotR, though I didn’t realize it at the time. I read a little at a time, and wanted to read more so badly that I started interrupting later parts of the dream to return to it. I read a little at the table, then played some Weezer songs on a 12-string guitar which belonged to this very friendly Arabic/Indian guy. He was about to leave and waited patiently for his guitar. Then he said (probably later) that the Solstice book was his and that I could have it or borrow it for a while if I wanted. He was definitely going to be a good friend.
Here’s the book:
Every other page was a big splash picture that, of course, I went into. It seemed to start with a part called “The Dragon Pits”. It seemed we were going to go deep into them for a treasure, but it ended up being a tower. We were seeking something like the “true jade” that was only ever used to make book pages. All around us near the opening were merchants selling rainbow-colored crystal idols. I was the hero in the story and there was a mentor with me.
We entered the tower. I had to find the secret door and say specific words so it would open. I tried the whole first floor, disbelieving that words could do it. This map of a side view of the tower appeared in my head and it indicated the third floor. The tower was like a thick, substantial Space Needle. While looking at the map, I watched us as little characters speed up one side of the tower and down the other.
Now the map view became real, and from that perspective, we were giants standing before the tower. The tower started looking scraggly. As giants we peeled back layers of the tower like skins. This revealed a blue skin, then a white skin, then a rotten, bug-infested wooden interior. The tower fell over. I didn’t want to touch it but this was a test and I had to stand it up. I did this and sizes suddenly began to return to normal. The tower began to transform and a huge sparkling white gem rose out of it and began rotating. Golden metal bands with glass lenses extended outwards and we ran to get to the far side of the lenses. The wood’s rotten look became intentional. It solidified and other gems peeked out. I ran like mad to get to the far side of the nearest lens.
As soon as I got there I turned and saw what must have been a big gem heave itself from the tower and roll straight for me. It was now, however, a HUGE black rock. Fear shot up inside of me and I wanted to leap aside but I held my ground as the rock got to me. The lens disappeared and turned into a beam of light which picked me up off the ground. It filled me completely with love, life, ecstatic energy. The scene scrolled back for a second and there I was in a big dark place like a movie theater, surrounded by motionless people, but I was floating above my seat, bending over backwards and shaking in blissful rapture. I remember the judgements I expected from those around me but I let the energy run. Then, back in the book, I was convinced. That was the most beautiful, powerful thing I have ever experienced and it changed me. I set off to return to my companions.
Ed and I took Rebecca to a muddy place to prepare for the next chapter of Solstice where there was a huge endless bug storm (neuron activity again). We got into the mud and it was up to our knees. A cat was nearby. There were floating islands of matted plants and trees, foaming steam pools, and then flying stinging red ants. Two attacked me. Just beyond was a bunch of people, including my new Arabic/Indian friend. I woke up.
References: Solstice was the name of a BBS I once had. Weezer is a band. The Space Needle is a tower in Seattle.
Rote with Backstory: The book contains a series of picture gateways. As I enter the story, it comes with information — background story and direction. I also become the hero of the story. Since these are qualities of rotes, then the book must be a rote where the pictures are gateways to certain parts of the story.
Perspective Zoom!: This is a great example of how easily scale can change. At first I’m searching within the tower, but once I’m looking at the map of it, I see the whole tower in front of me. It was easy to walk into the perspective from the map and find myself as big as as the tower, standing next to it.
Stage of the Mind: The greater context of this adventure was once myself reading a book, but when it zoomed out later — exited the book gateway, I was in a theater. I was as affected there by the ecstatic light as I was in the dream scene, but my reaction was closer to what it’d be if I were awake, publicly in the full embrace of ecstasy.
This shows that a) when we enter a rote or gateway, we are projecting into it, while also remaining outside it, and b) that what’s going on inside the rote/gateway can affect us outside of it as well, in real-time. Here it seems I’m the only one in the theater having an ecstatic experience within this rote.
A New Dream Friend: A casual time hanging out with some dream friends in a cafe leads to this adventure within Solstice and the new friend.
