Dream Journal

Context: I was playing Warcraft II at the time.
I’m playing Warcraft. I land in a small village surrounded by a desert, but there are distant trees all around and a cliff rising up on one side. Atop is the orc’s castle. It’s big, black, and sooty, surrounded by a forest of dead trees. There’s nothing on the ground except dried vines and leaves and barren saplings. The trees only have sparse leaves near the top.
I have lots to do but the going is slow. I’m slipping bombs into this piping system. Then I realize I must build. I go up to the castle to claim part of it as mine. But it’s not abandoned and I run into a bunch of orcs. I scurry away and find a bunch of my fellows — team orange! A voice whispers to me: “There’s more of them, but you can still win. Use your shield-men wisely!” I realize there’s 2-3 shield guys and I inhabit one of them. The battle is intense and fun as I personally engage in the fight. I stave off attack after attack and use my shield to smash and knock down the orcs (which aren’t orcs at all up close but men my age). Rafe is one of them. I realize this only after I slit his neck. I’m apologetic but he smiles and insists I shouldn’t be. He falls over. I feel a bit weird but keep going.
Oh, and the orcs/men have this big black skeleton bug dragon. It has no wings, but instead has hundreds of spiny bug legs. He climbs atop this short spiral spire and shoots brown acid down into the battle. It was at this point that I restarted the scenario.
The voice speaks to me as I go immediately to explore: “The orcs aren’t here yet. They’re returning from a mission.” I start heading to where I found my allies last time and march right into a large enemy troop. I run through them and they split up and I’m back where I first saw them. I go to the corner. I review their stats with help from the voice and find they’re too much to handle.
I turn to these “fairies” which appear as busty female mighty mouses. They’re bright pastel colors: pink and yellow and light green. Some are “super” and help the others to get up to where I am, but then more and more can fly and become “super”. Now they become typical fairies and join me against the orcs. A few got stuck in some wood and have to teleport to get free, leaving fairy dust behind. The thing about fairies — it’s hard not to get sucked into them. I almost lost the dream a few times getting sucked into fairy world or some dream featuring only them. I was hypnotized, mesmerized watching them.
I also had a little dream of being in the bedroom here with Rebecca, doing normal stuff, and I find the card I put in the mail yesterday. I think “Oh, no, I must have bought two!” It was a memory, surely. What a way to throw your mind for a loop — being lost in time.
References: Warcraft II is a top-view video game.
Into Warcraft: Written at the time: “So much of this was like Warcraft, but expanded into a real world. Wow!”
Warcraft I, II, and III were real-time strategy (RTS) games where you looked down on a 3D landscape from a fixed perspective. I loved those games. I had this dream in 1997, experiencing what it would be like to descend into and live the game in first person. I’m sure many people had similar dreams (including the game developers), because this entire area existed in the dream world.
Seven years later, in 2004, Blizzard introduced this very thing — World of Warcraft, a massive online RPG in which people got to live out this very dream. When it came out, it was a huge hit, and I got deeply into it for several years.
I just noticed — it’s called WoW for short, and I followed my statement above with “Wow!”
Fairies: Fairies aren’t even characters in Warcraft, but here they are again. They really do have a power to take over your dream, so be very careful! They can be very mischievous, mesmerizing, distracting, and greedy for your attention.
Guiding Voice: This was a voice without a body or source, that spoke to me with helpful information. Was it a part of me?
Restart: The helpful voice keeps me appraised of the situation as I rewind the rote.
Character Inhabitation: Myself and some others are inhabiting characters in a big Warcraft battle. Inhabitation works just as well in fictional video game rotes.
Reality of Dreams: I’m dreaming, but I can’t tell. I try to make sense of seeing the card again when it should be in the mail.
